I'd like to think that I would jump in the water right away as opposed to checking my phone to make sure I got it all.

Embraer 09-23-2013 07:52 AM

crazy how hard he hits the concrete, and the front does not bend or contort really, at all.

Embraer 09-23-2013 07:53 AM

and yes...id be diving into the water instantly.

GH85Carrera 09-23-2013 07:56 AM

Good roll cage. I hope the occupants were OK.

1990C4S 09-23-2013 08:13 AM

He locked the brakes and never turned the front wheels. Drove straight into the barrier from what I could see.

speeder 09-23-2013 08:18 AM

Yeah, that was strange.

HardDrive 09-23-2013 08:21 AM

Bizarre. He made no effort to turn. Failure in the steering?

widebody911 09-23-2013 08:40 AM

Looks like a failure in the carbon-based control system

motion 09-23-2013 08:41 AM

Obviously a youtube stunt.

speeder 09-23-2013 08:46 AM

If he was aiming for the pond, "Nice shot, man".

Either that or a loose nut behind the wheel.

Laneco 09-23-2013 08:57 AM

It would be very interesting to know what was going through the passengers mind as this transpired.

If he hit any harder it might have been his butt.

javadog 09-23-2013 09:15 AM

You can see he was turning the wheels just before impact but, since they were locked, nothing came of it. Hard hit...

Samir, TURN, TURN

Sami YOU MUST LISTEN TO ME!!!

Apparently the gas pedal got stuck. Luckily the driver and navigator only suffered very minor injuries and the damage to the car also seems to be less serious than expected. It couls have been much worse if they hit a more solid object than water.

kach22i 09-23-2013 11:15 AM

I think he chose a head on crumple zone impact, over a side crunching side impact (on his side no less) which may have crippled him for life.

Lots more car ahead of you, than on the side of you.

Bill Douglas 09-23-2013 12:24 PM

He was ordinary old "going too fast". When he hit the brakes he locked them up and the car carried on going straight ahead. All that smoke is tire smoke, and you can hear him accelerating very late towards the corner.

RWebb 09-23-2013 01:12 PM

what were the injuries?

Gene Wilkes 09-23-2013 01:16 PM

It's amazing that the guy pictured at the end of the video expresses no concern for the people in the car!!

Yeah, what is with the people just standing there like that? Those guys could drown pretty quickly.

Tire sort of went up the barrier. Tire hit it, more so than the fender. Locked up tire is not going to turn.

If there's anything good about this, it's the health of the passenger. Hopefully, insurance says no to the claim, and it won't inflate rates. What a dumb a$$.

Shut up.

doug_porsche 09-23-2013 08:18 PM

The surprising part to me is that nobody from the crowd reacted and/or tried to help.

Oh Hum. A car with two people in it is partially submerged near me. Well at least they dont have to worry about a fire. What car is coming next?

Speedalac 930 09-23-2013 09:06 PM

Thinking maybe the navigator missed calling out the corners or stuck throttle. He was no way in position to make that turn.

Why the contempt? Dude was out doing what his car was built to do and made a mistake. It's happened to all of us, just for this guy it ended worse than some of us... SmileWavy

Hope you never wad a car up whilst pushing the limits. ;)

genrex 09-23-2013 10:44 PM

I think they got out of the car okay.

Here's a link to the video of them getting out:

Not a stuck throttle IMHO. Just missed the turn completely. Got busy saving it out of the previous turn and trying to go fast. You can see and hear (?) an upshift a second before the tires lock up.

I am too poor to drive like that. Blessing in disguise! ;)

mph911 09-23-2013 10:58 PM

The driver said it was a stuck throttle. You can hear the car revving when he locks up..

aigel 09-23-2013 11:15 PM

I don't hear it. I'd say it was a stuck throttle too. No offense, who knows what you do in the heat of the moment, but doesn't he have a clutch? "Both feet in" would be my reaction, not just the brakes. Maybe the guy never Autocrossed. :)

mph911 09-23-2013 11:23 PM

He has rallied a bit, even in WRC car, who knows..

Team Kleinjan Racing

aigel 09-23-2013 11:31 PM

Yes, we will never find out! :)

Painful to watch that 964 in the dirt on his website.

Best of luck to him!

If a missed call, the driver has eyes and is staring at a fast approaching jersey barrier. If a stuck throttle, turn off the engine and both feet in. I don't get this accident at all. Killed a 964 RSR. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Only saving grace is the owners of other 964RSRs just saw their cars' value rise.

mph911 09-24-2013 03:20 AM

It was already destroyed before the crash if its a real RSR, from the website it looks like it has/had a 3.4 water cooled engine and a sequential box??

dad911 09-24-2013 04:04 AM

No ABS? Must have removed it?

unclebilly 09-24-2013 05:32 AM

To the guys who called the driver a 'dumbass'... Umm, this is racing - look it up sometime. Every F1 driver has had a racing incident at one point in his career, eventually it happens if you are using the capabilities of yourself and the hardware. If you aren't pushing the capabilities, you aren't racing, you are lapping (read posing) - end of story.

Yup, he damaged an RSR... Weren't the RSR's supposed to be race cars? I don't see what the big deal is here, provided both driver and co-driver walked away. Don't bring your car to the track unless you can afford to walk away from it there, or you have track day insurance. This is why my 2 track cars are cars I can leave behind without too much pain... Also I have a spare tub in the back 40 just in case.

Speedalac 930 09-24-2013 07:09 AM

A stuck throttle is not as easy to save as some may think. Time goes very quick especially if you jab it once.

A black eye and some minor bruises. Interview (in dutch) with the driver after the crash also showing the car: Kleinjan nauwelijks onder de indruk van crash in Hellendoorn Rally - YouTube

I had a rubber engine mounting block on my old 66 Mustang give way once back in 1981. The torque of the engine lifted the engine up and stuck the throttle wide open for a second. It was scary as all heck, somehow it released and the engine re-seated it's self.

Stuck throttle is nothing to trifle about.
