Auto Dealership Keeps Calling Me (RANT)

I went to look at trucks to pull our new boat, something other than our F250 which is our business truck that stays hooked to a goose neck. Yes the F250 is great at pulling a 2400 lb boat rig but wife wanted something like a Ridgeline or Frontier to pull it with and to go skiing in. Off the freeway were 4 dealers and I thought I could look at a lot of different rides in a short amount of time. One was Auto Nation and the sales guy was nice and really wanted my cell #. Sometimes I give them a wrong # but I liked his Ridgeline. We ended up getting one at another dealer 3 years newer and 45k miles less than the one he showed me for the same money. He called the next day and I told him thanks, but we purchased a newer one. The next day the sales manager called, the next day the G.M. called and today another sales girl called. I told each caller I had bought one and not to call again. Does Auto Nation think they can keep calling me and I will purchase a car from them?

Why don't you buy a car from them and report back?

Are they all coming from the same number? If yes, save it as "spam" and put the ring tone as silent.

If not, just let your calls go to VM and delete them. That's what I do with ALL unknown caller IDs anyway.

I have a google voice number specifically for this reason.

When it rings it can only be someone I did not want to have my regular number or it's a wrong number.

Either way, it never gets answered.

I did not keep track of the numbers as every time they call I thought it would end. My cell # is my business # so I try to answer all calls. I also have 3 items for sale on auto trader.

I always give them my fax # - fun for them to hear.

Seriously - you knew they would likely abuse any number given out, so...

That's why I have the toss away number.

Have had the same cell number for 20 years,

I'm fiercely protective of it.

Call them back, tell them to knock it off or you will file complaints with the BBB and everyone else you can think of. Report them to the FCC too.

Next time they call tell them that you can't talk right now and ask them for their cell number. Set alarm for 3am and call them back to discuss the truck your not ever going to buy from them.

I do it the other way. I ported my # to Google Voice, and have it for ever ($20 one-time fee). I don't give out the DID's it forwards to so I can change those any time.

Then I use Google screening to sort out who I want to talk to (or not), and what calls to return.

I set mine up so that if the caller ID is tagged in a specific group(s), they get a recording that says the # is not in service, phone doesn't ring, no voice mail.

If it's an unknown (no caller ID) # or in a "blocked" group, it goes to call screening - no phones ring. If they pass call screening (auto-dialers from call centers fail this step, for example) and leave a message, I get a voicemail, and an email transcription (with a handy "click to call" link for phone #'s) with an attached recording.

Otherwise, all the phones ring, and I can transfer calls from whatever phone I happen to pick up to another (e.g. transfer to cell and keep talking while I go out, transfer to DECT headset with big battery etc.)

It's not perfect, but it mostly works very well. Sometimes it's worth it for the giggle factor of the transcribed voice mail alone (some people seem to really confuse the software)
