What are you lusting after in terms of cars?

Well after a little over two years of ownership of my 2001 Boxster base I am gently sniffing around for something newer. I ask myself why? Well I try to justify it. Newer, less chance of ims failure and a coupe something like an early Cayman. I don't want one with a warranty as that would be too pricey. Something around $30k. I have not ruled out an early 911 - there is a 2001 996 Carrera4 $38k at the Porsche dealership which in my mind it way overpriced. I have asked them to see how much they would allow for my trade in. There is a 2007 Cayman for sale privately here around $32k.

Fortunately the Cayman is not at the dealership or else I would be down there in a flash. I will bide my time as the Box runs just fine with only 40k miles. Once the snow is on the ground the stealership does not allow test drives(insurance purposes) and many private P cars are garaged for the winter. As I have no Porsche shrink at hand you can be a Porsche shrink and tell me your thoughts...

Also how many of you out there have this urge to upgrade to something better(aka fantasties that become realities?)

I have 3 automotive desires, one of which is filled.

1) Safe vehicle for the wife to drive my kids around. No worries about breakdowns, etc. Taken care of.

2) I'd like a new car for myself - AC that works all the time, no worries about break downs, slightly better gas mileage. I can keep limping along in my current car for another year or so...

3) Restore my 356 - no concors stuff, just good driving condition. Will take a long time - almost had the funds before the stock market crash, then almost had 'em again before another crash, then ended up having to sell what little I had to take care of some legal issues. But, it WILL happen one day.

Nothing. As I get older, I find myself "lusting" for less. Maybe I need a mid-life crisis.

I am almost through the mechanical Phase I restoration of my 914. Phase II will be cosmetics and paint.

I have most of the parts for my 356, but that is really a long term project.

Im looking for a hotrod Datsun 510 driver project now.

That should keep me busy for the next 10 years.

Cool thread! Here are the three groups of cars I am lusting after presently:

1. Cayman S / Cayman R: - once I actually get around to selling my 944S2, this car would be a perfect upgrade as a track toy.

2. Ferrari 246 Dino / Porsche 904GTS / Lancia Stratos: In my opinion, this trio of cars are the most gorgeous vintage cars ever produced. Would love to have one in my stable.

3. Lotus Exige / C6 Vette Z06 / 997 GT3: If I didn't drink all that Porsche Kool aid (or had a budget for a GT3) these toys would make for some fun laps at the track!

A rust free air cooled 911, any year. The cheaper the better.

I'm pretty happy with my 944's. I would like a car with 60's Italian styling. Probably the most affordable is the Volvo P1800, but I've never driven one to know if the interior fits me or not.

I'd also love to build an open cockpit Honda powered roadster with 30/50's Grand Prix styling to it.

The new GT3.

That 150K sticker is all that is stopping me.

Every so often I start snooping around for 996 or 997 based GT3. The prices are simi-reasonable. I just can't see spending that much money on a car. I just love on my 1985 Carrera that has been paid for since the late nineteen hundreds.

My desires are a bit more pedestrian than a GT3 or the like. I have been looking for a 06 bmw 3 series. I was doing this in stealth mode as a replacement for the wifes car. I told her of my plan last nite and she floored me with her reply.
"Honey, I would like a late 60's or 70's car. It needs power steering and power brakes with AC"
I thought of an Impala, Galaxie 500, Gran Torino but am kinda stumped on what exactly. It doesn't need to be a muscle car or even a sleeper. Any thoughts? Don't want to go more than 15k for the car.

Even the very best of the 60s or 70s cars sucked to drive compared to any modern car. They were virtually all carbureted and had crappy brakes, poor heating and air-conditioning.

You will really want a resto modded car if it that old unless she only drives it very little.

I would love a 1940s pickup, but I would want it 100% modernized. Just the old body stuck on a modern chassis.

I love my 85 911, it has been a great car and I drive it alot. But now i'm looking and would like to stay with a p-car, just something newer. I need more comfort in my sports car i've decided. Can't afford a new one but i've been thinking about anything 09 and later due to ims and rms issues. I want a trouble free car and don't want to worry about the motor self destructing. But every time I go for a ride i fall back in love with my 85. Of course the heat of summer is passing and it is cooling off nicely here. In fact maybe i'll head to "the Tail" for some leaf changing scenery and think about selling/buying next year.

I just can't believe that someone could belong to this forum for more than a day and refer to a 996 as an "early 911"?

A BMW K1200RS...

I know, not a car but that's what I'm currently lusting after. Got a big want to be back on two.

I have no overwhelming desire for a different car right now but cars I would like to have:

G55 AMG: Possible replacement down the line for our family vehicle
w211 E55 AMG: Same as the G55 AMG but probably not since it does not have AWD but then again who knows.

Dream car: 300 SL gullwing (I am only 5 lottery numbers away from one)

Cars I would like to own:

another aircooled 911, especially 1973 or before
w126 Mercedes most likely a 560SEC or 500SEC with AMG documentation
930
300D with manual transmission
