In the 8th grade on a skateboard hauling ass down a long hill with a bunch of other kids. We must have done this hundreds or times without problems. This kid lost control fell onto my path. Next thing I knew, I couldn't get up with stars around me. I didn't want to tell my parents I almost cracked my head open, so they made me go to school the next day. It was hell and didn't say a word to anyone all day.

The same year, a friend and I goofing off chasing each other. I was running full speed, did not see the steel bar and ran right into it. cut my forehead open and I was knock out for a few minutes. I got up and saw blood everywhere. F' old dear, that one hurt like hell.

Oh, what's worst was the cleaning the wound in the hospital.

5...

2 during pee-wee football

1 playing freeze tag...two guys diving under one guy to unfreeze him = coconut sound

2 playing soccer (playing keeper, hit the goal post with the noggin, other one going up over a guy for a header and my chin landed on his head....during homecoming.)

all hospital stays...

Once last winter, skiing. Helmet cracked.
Don't.
Remember.
A thing.

Helo, hospital, CT, MRI, weeks before and after. Not a pixel left. Older details went blank too.

Amnesia sucks. Bad.

one morning we were working on one of our spud barges changing cable that lifts the 2'x2' x 40' spud. my father lifted the spud up with the crane and I was to stick a 3" x 3' solid steel pin thru the hole to hold the spud up while we changed cables. I got about 2" or so of pin thru the hole when my father dropped the spud.this levered the pin up and slammed the 1/2" plate handle up in to my jaw which lifted me a couple feet off the ground and I landed slap out cold on the deck. woke up in a few seconds and finished the job but later noticed I started getting tunnel vision. field of vision shrank smaller and smaller until I could only see one letter on an entire magazine page.vision came back little by little until everything was good again. must have also cracked one of my teeth as it broke off later that night

bouncing my head off the back of a clothes rail on castors when my friend and I tried to use it as a gaint skateboard, felt very ill for hours and very long headache

hitting the back of my head on a concrete wall while wrestling my brother, there was blood and a not so bad headache as it didn't make me feel ill

hitting the back of my head at a village fun day duing an obstacle course, nearly blacked out but blinked as fast as I could and stayed on the right side of conciousness

trying to do a 3 turn somersault off a 10ft high diving board, only made it 2.5 turns, hit the water with my face so hard I'd thought I'd missed the pool, had blurred vision for a day, a headache for 3 days and chipped all my front teeth

showing my kids how to use a sledge and coming off at about 40mph but was saved again from blacking out by using my trusty blinking method

The bump that makes me shudder the most when I think about it is when I was hit by a car on my bicycle while not wearing a helmet. I was pitched over the bars so fast I had no time to get my hands out and hit the tarmac shoulder first. A slightly different projectory and it would have been my first and last knock out.

4 in total. One suffered in bicycle accident during road race in North County SD. By far the worst was when I passed out while shopping (had flu and was majorly dehydrated) and cracked my head on the concrete floor. Halo skull fracture. Off to local trauma center in the ambulance for a 10 day stay. 2 months off work. Most recent was when I was moving some upper cabinets in my garage. Removed what I 'thought' were all the mounting screws but cabinet was stubborn. I pulled and pulled until it CAME. Saw stars and dark but managed to stay on my feet. Lots of blood with that one.
