Is there really any free way to check your credit score?
I'm thinking may be a good time to refi and catch a lower rate on my mortgage.
Is there any way to check what my credit score is with out paying or putting up a CC number? It confounds me that I go to a lender and give them all personal/financial info plus SS number and then they turn around and ask me what my credit score is. Thanks, Scott

Both credit unions that I belong to will give printed copies of my report, with score on it, and even spend time with me figuring out my next step to having a higher score.

You can check your credit for free once a year using www.annualcreditreport.com.
It's not like the "freecreditreport" site that has those snazzy commercials. They've got to pay for those commercials somehow. BUT!! You don't get your credit score from annualcreditreport.com. You just get your creditreport, ie what accounts are open, what credit you have applied for, who has asked to look at your credit, any late payments or defaults, etc... If you want your credit score, you can buy it from Equifax while you are going through the credit report process for somewhere between $5.95 and $7.95 the last time I tried.

Is it true that checking your credit score actually lowers your score?

If you plan to refi, they will pull your credit for sure. So just go do it. It's going to cost you, but you're refi'ing anyway.
LO is probably asking your score to see if you're worth his time. If I worked in A paper and someone told me they had a 500, I'd tell them to go somewhere else. |

Just checked, $15.95... may be the easiest way to go.

actually I know a Wells Fargo Loan officer who is whining about needing more apps- she's willing to do prequals just to shut her boss up- app doesn't need to go anywhere. She wanted me to app yesterday but, that wouldn't fly since her boss is my old boss...
Let me know if you want access. She's not going to lean on you for a deal. PM me for Sherri's info.

I thought the fair credit reporting act amendment FACTA required each of the three to provide a report for free, if asked, one time per year.

You can get a free report, but not the magic score number from them.

No. Hits from the consumer don't show or count, nor do updates from current credit providers. Similarly, "cluster" hits, such as several mortgage companies or brokers, within a short period of time (i.e. shopping for the best mortgage) only lower your score as one hit. At least that's the case here in Canada. I'd imagine it's the same there.

Start with your credit reports. Its free and wise to check at least once or twice a year to see if there is identity theft or incorrect info. Knowing what to look for will help you get a feel for what your score may be. A good score will be based on a solid prior history (the larger the better), no bad reports, and a good debt to earning ratio. After that there are a bunch of other less major factors.
That said, when a consumer buys a score, he is NOT getting the same score the bank or loan company sees. Its a bit of a scam. Your credit score: not the same score lenders see - Sep. 25, 2012
