SC and Carrera prices? Seriously?

Just browsing the classifieds and being tempted.

I am blown away at some of the asking prices for SC's and Carrera's

Has the market really gone up this much? Or are folks dreaming?

Makes a Boxster or 996 look appealing

I just thought about that last night. I went to ebay and searched for Porsches from oldest year to newest year. Obviously the 356's are expensive. But man, there are some crap 912's and early cars for insano prices.

Boxster for 8K here in SoCal? Yes Please.

What kind of crazy numbers are we talking about?
My 80 SC targa is listed for $13,500 and is still in my garage.

Same in Sweden. I got my Carrera 10 years ago for the equivalent of $20k. Now they are advertised for $30-35 average.

Only car ever I have own that have increased its value.

over $50k in Australia for either SC or 3.2 (top cars)
$10k increase in a year

This is only Australian delivered coupes. Targa's and imports around $30k - $35k

You make a good point- it's sometimes hard to know what things are really changing hands for. Asking prices mean nothing if buyers and sellers are not coming together.

I saw a couple of tempting cars on eBay maybe a year ago that no one was bidding asking price for. I was sorely tempted by both of them. The problem now is not just prices but the shortage of really nice cars for sale, regardless of price.

As for Boxsters and 996s, that is a completely different market with supply exceeding demand and prices continuously dropping rather than going up. I've always prefered under-valued cars to over-valued ones.

It's simply nuts. Though I felt for years that the SC and Carrera were undervalued. What other legendary "classic" car is practical and reliable enough to drive daily, fantastic fun to drive, and can be had for under $20k? Seems that people are starting to realize it. Right now I'd say you'll be challenged to find much Carrera for under $20k, and the SC isn't far behind. G50 cars are $25k pretty easily. I suspect they're going to keep going up, because even at high prices the good cars are selling quickly.

In a few years I suspect we are going to be lamenting about why we all didn't stock up on G50 Carreras when they were $15k.

The 1970 911T that I paid $4500 for back in 2004 is now probably a $20k car. I doubt many investments have done that well.

I agree but that's asking price. Who knows what they really sell for when they finally do.

That's great and I'm not disagreeing with you but if you wanted to sell, how long would it take for a real buyer to show up?

I know of 3 SC's that sold for (buyer paid) around $50k in the past 3 months.

Honestly Matt, I find that surprising. The local market (Adelaide) is very flat.

The good cars have been snapped up in no time, occasionally before being advertised. I have people asking me all the time if I know of cars for sale. SC's and 3.2's have found a new market, and people are seeing the value in them compared to the price of early Aussie delivered long-hoods.. A Porsche specialist in Sydney has sold a few for top dollar. I know of 3.2's sold for over $50k.

Edit - Try finding an Aussie delivered SC coupe, with matching numbers etc. very difficult. Let alone a good one. all the cars advertised are targa's or import/converted cars.

There are plenty of good cars out there for reasonable prices.

I got this 86 Cab I'm "restoring" for a friend for $11K. Needs paint, was keyed, and some interior to freshen up, but a solid car. It sold cheaply mostly because the pressure plate was broken, easy fix. Bonus was finding it had a limited slip.

Anyone wanting this 83 SC with a complete top end can get it for $12K. Has many cosmetics issues but you could buy the car and drive it across country worry free.

I posted my SC here on Pelican and sold it in a few hours for $22.5 with several interested buyers. The car was in great shape. The speed with which it sold did leave me wondering if I should have asked for a higher price.

North Carolina has a personal property tax on cars (which irritates me to no end) and for the past 5 years or so, every year the county raises the value of our 84 Carrera. Several times I filed an appeal, with market value I dredged up, and was moderately successful, but each year they start out several thousand $ higher than the starting point the year before. They use some service that tracks all car selling prices and it's hard to argue with that. It is now in the low $20's. At one point I had them down to $12k.
