1999 996 With LS1

Why not? Seems like a fair price. No affiliation.

1999 Porsche 911 - LS1 swap

Assuming the swap was done well, why not? Thing has got to fly.

Lots of power upgrades for the LS1 too.

No risk of IMS failure.

Decent 996's with the IMS upgrade are ridiculously cheap. I don't see $8,000 added value for the LS1 option. But I still like it.

That looks like fun.

I wonder why it has a Michigan license plate, though. The CL ad shows San Diego.

I'm sure it hauls ass, but I don't think that engine really fits a 996. Why not just buy a Camaro or GTO? The price is just silly, I suspect you could build one with for $15k by starting with a 996 that needs a motor. I also laughed at "a/c delete", which is another way if saying that getting it working was too hard.

I was under the impression that if the engine transplanted into the car was newer than the chassis and that it also had all emissions equipment, it was legal in CA.

Technically it should be smogable if the LS1 came out of a car that had all of its smog parts intact and fully transplanted that system into the 996. I'm not sure if the year being older or newer matters so much as it is inspectable based upon the donor car's equipment. It would need to go to a referee station though - no ifs ands or buts. I imagine if it came from Michigan where the work was done and then the guy moved to SD and Michigan didn't have the rules that california does for smog hardware in cars then it probably is missing a lot or is a crate motor that didn't have that stuff. I'm not sure if crate motors can be smogged like that or how you determine what smog hardware has to be in place when putting a crate motor in a car.

I hate california smog laws - they are counter productive to folks making things better. I don't mind a tail-pipe test but when you require OE originality at all costs you tie the hands of folks who would love to keep their old cars with new hardware for a lot of reasons.

I would have loved to keep my SC but every single year I had to fight to get it through the smog check and jump through hoops. I would have loved to put a new engine in it but the cost of rebuilding it and trying to find all the OE smog gear and then the fact that after that it would have probably not been any better in the performance area - I sold it instead. If the law was simply based on the tail pipe or even if I could pay a higher fee to get past the OE requirements AND still pass a tail pipe test I would have tried a programmable EFI setup and rebuilt the engine and what not and kept that car.

Shortsightedness designed to sell new cars.

Perhaps this is why it's for sale?

I believe it requires an extensive check at a 'referee' station where they effectively re-VIN the vehicle and put all sorts of flags in the CA DMV system about the car.

Not the same car, but here is a video from Renegade talking about the conversion.
And they say it is available with a "50 state legal" option.

The bad:
1. Exhaust gasket leak at the manifold on the right bank. Simple and cheap repair.
Give me a break. If it was simple and cheap, it'd be done. Sounds like a PITA to do and / or a sloppy job on the install in the first place. If you CANNNOT install a header that's not leaking on the first 3k miles, what else did you eff up?.

$25k? For a few grand more you can get a 996 twin turbo, assembled in Deutschland, with working a/c and no exhaust leaks.

Yup, I say $15k tops. He doesn't mention it but I doubt it has a full working gauge cluster, cruise control, and I'm very curious if systems like ABS/traction/stability control are working correctly. If they take engine inputs, probably not.

Build thread here. He sold the wire harness from the 996.....so some things had to be wired using a switch panel inside.

I'd get a used 370 with low miles, frigid AC, and tons of power for that price, and it'll go five years before I have to pop open the hood. The 996 looks great and I'm sure it's pretty quick, but without AC, rear seats, and annoying leaks to boot, no thanks.

Why not just buy a Vette? 1/2 the price and everything works.

Local Vettes crush local 911's at autocrosses.
