Bringing this back from the dead..

So, I did some more checking and ddid thee following

Rebuilt carb to stock Edelbrock specifications.
Carb spacer added.
Carb body cleaned out
floats checked
replaced fuel pump. As hardflex suggested, the fuel pump was leaking.
Fresh oil and filter
timing set as best I could.

She starts up easily now, fast idle set, choke works.

However she still drinks gas. Took a 1/4 gallon of fuel to move it 50 feet today.

Any ideas?

I would confirm basic stuff like a compression check , plugs all firing ,looking at the plugs will show if it,s running filthy rich or firing correctly at the same time. Brakes dragging? If it,s been sitting a long time a fuel gauge isn,t the best way to measure actual fuel consumption in 50 ft either.

Um, this is running the truck with the fuel line in a gallon can of gas. Didnt feel like i should run it from the tank.

That at least helps confirm the bad mileage but also consider you might have used a quart to fill the empty carb, pump and lines.. Still I would confirm the basic health of the engine next.

I know you probably don't need it, but this looks to be a good price for a parts car...

Roughly 160psi on all cylinders. Fresh oil.

Cant figure out why this thing is drinking some much fuel..

Is the vacuum and mechanical advance working correctly ?
An old vac advance unit will often have a leaking diaphragm .

Just to offer some moral support! This is my '71. I've had it for 12 yrs. When built right, the AMC V8's make great power and are very reliable. Mine is a 360 I built with both power and reliability mods. It's a strong motor.

I run a 600 cfm Holley with offroad needle and seats and a crossover bowl vent. It works decent offroad, but sure isn't fuel injection!

It's a Mallory HEI with less than 10 miles on it.

I wouldn,t expect miracles with fuel mileage with any changes though.
Hahaha...wise words. I love the looks of those trucks as well but it's almost like they intentionally designed them to be inefficient is those days.
