Told the wife we should get divorced.
She didnt take it too well.
I told her we would still live together just like now, but not be officially married. She makes ~$10/hr, I make a little more than that. We are planning on having our first kid. I thought we get divorced and she would qualify for food stamps, free healthcare, WIC, and whatever else the gubmint would throw at us. Financially sounds like a good plan. She doesnt like the idea. ![]()

actually, at that income level, you'll probably qualify for WIC anyway.... we did with 2 kids, the wife, and just my income (low to mid 40s at the time). It is based on household income and number of pregnant people and kids under 5 or so.

I hope you are just trying to be ironic based on reports that in many states you can make better money on welfare than the minimum wage, and that more Americans are on some form of welfare than actually working full time. If you are actually serious, then based on your signature I think it's time to sell some toys.

Marriage is not what it used to be. The 'marriage penalty' tax came back under Obama. :-/
You certainly can have dedication to the relationship(s) regardless of marital status in the eyes of the govt. That is, "Married" does not make the relationship - the people involved do. Biggest problem is that women have been brainwashed into believing "Happily ever after" stories (which demand the 'married' label)

Working in government for the last 4-5 years has opened my eyes (and I didn't think I had them shut). There are so many free this, free that, X/Y/Z assistance programs, grants, blah blah blah that it will make your head spin. The general public has no idea how far beyond welfare, WIC and foodstamps this goes. If you need something, you can have it for free... you just need to know how to navigate the BS.
I know a guy that makes 65-70K a year, single guy. He got the state to pay for $6k hearing aides because he told them his hearing deficiencies "could" cost him his job. The "Michigan Works" program has a pot of money they have to distribute each period to save jobs and they got to use his story as a stat. FYI, he has VERY mild hearing issues and there is ZERO chance he would lose his job over it. That's just one story and I know it doesn't prove anything, but it starts your mind thinking "what else is out there?" I'll tell ya, it's crazy.

My grandfather owned multiple mobile home parks, I spent my teen years working maintenance and remodeling for him. You want stories about people gaming the system for welfare and disability? I got stories.......

I do pretty ok financially but don't have a Porsche, and certainly don't have the 911 that I would like to have. Taking care of responsibilities comes before toys, and those who take care of their responsibilities will ultimately have the money for the toys.

He could probably double his hosehold income if he married a man.
Then they could adopt.

We dont NEED to do this, and I dont need to sell any cars to support my family.
But a LOT of my money goes to free loaders, why not get some back? My job is all about optimization. Apply this to personal finances; minimize output (taxes, healthcare, etc...) and maximize income (gubment cheese and obomaphone). Dont hate because you didnt think of it!! ![]()
