Sounds like he's asking for trouble to me.

Here's an article with a bit more info.

That's pretty crazy. I've read Alex Roy's book "The Driver" who did it in 31hrs 4mins (with gas receipts and gps tracking to prove it) and it seemed like they were near the limit. Making up 2 hours and averaging 98mph is nuts.

The 98mph doesn't surprise me because I'm sure there were stretches around the midwest where they went way, way faster than that to make up for the areas of much slower traffic.

+1 on the Benz and setup. Luck had to have been a big portion of the record run.

Hmmmm... ah yes, those days with scanners pre-programmed per jurisdiction (watch out for old school VASCAR), the toggle off for TL and BL. Solenoid actuated drop down rear plate LOL.

I don't think he was using a radar jammer, I think it was a laser jammer. There's a big difference. Radar jammers are federally illegal and laser jammers are legal.

Says he's a Lamborghini sales director and they used two laser jammers. It's possible he used one front-facing and one rear but "two laser jammers" might be code for "one laser jammer and one radar jammer" so he's not admitting to running afoul of any laws (FCC regs). When you read the story he's really not said or admitted to anything that can get him nailed - he doesn't say exactly which states he went through and even if he did, let's say Kentucky wants to charge him - all he has to say is "funny thing, we did the exact speed limit all the way through Kentucky and made up our 98 mph average in other states - prove me wrong".

Cool story.

Richard Rawlings, the Gas Monkey Garage guy claims to have the record at 31 hrs 59 minutes.

He claims Roy's record is not legit because he did not follow the route of the original Cannonball.

Rawlings might be correct, though I think at this point the goal is as fast as possible, no matter the route, as long as it's NYC- LA.

In his book Roy chronicles the whole Gumball world, including his friendship/rivalry with Rawlings. I found it to very entertaining.

Richard Rollins, aka, gas monkey, would not have enough sense to figure a way out of his driveway.

I guess the NSA can access his GPS log and forward it on to the 20 or so states he passed through.... that would be expensive.

As fast as that is, it is slow.

The SR71 went the other direction.

64 MINUTES! Flying to museum at retirement of the aircraft, Los Angeles to Virginia's coast, average speed 2,124 mph. Now that is fast. And a record that will not be beat anytime soon.
