Doctor ordered to demolish 'mountain' built atop penthouse apartment in Beijing

A doctor who spent six years and $130,000 transforming his penthouse apartment into a mountain retreat has been told to tear it down by officials who said the work was done without permission.

Zhang Biqing, who founded a chain of Chinese medicine clinics, bought the 26th-floor dwelling and then moved rocks, wooden panels and shrubbery to the roof using a service elevator.

The bizarre residence sits atop one of several high-rises in a very affluent corner of the city’s Haidian district.

68 degrees year round .....
There used to be a big ole house/store near there (Moab) called the hole in the rock.
Sold Navajo curios, souvenirs, tourist trap stuff.
It could be 100 degrees outside and it was cool and dry inside, neat place 'cept they painted HOLE IN THE ROCK in great big white letters on the side of the mountain, kida ruined the whole thing and made it seem cheeep.

IIRC there was also a gas station in the rock.

What could be cooler than this house? At least that is what I thought in the 70s.

Yes, I'm familiar with it, though I've never visited it. My grandmother (Nadine Davis) remarried late in life to Hub Davis. Hub was the son of the original owner/builder (or maybe he was a stepchild, don't know for sure). Anyway, Hub owned Hole in the Rock until about 2000.

Small world, eh?

Small world indeed.
Haven't been by there in decades, I wonder if it's still there?

Greene & Greene - my faves!

They were brothers. One was an architect and one was an artist. Their father was a pulmonologist who moved west to treat breathing disorders. The boys were raised to believe in well ventilated and sunlit homes. Many wealthy customers from the east would commission them to build homes in So Cal. One prominent feature were sleeping porches off of the bedrooms.

Another signature feature was exposed joinery so you could see how it was put together!

The brothers designed the whole package. The stair-stepped motif is repeated everywhere. The designed the carpets, the drapes (curtain rods are of ebony), and all the furniture.

I'm disheartened by the replacement of the meaning of "cool house" with "garish house" with many of the houses posted.

Perhaps cool, garish and weird are all the same to many.

Embraer 11-06-2013 06:21 AM

I guess it's just subjective. I posted a jail converted to a house. lots here would think it's weird. I think it's cool.

now for a cool house picture:

You have a point kach. Many are completely unnecessary, but personally I like the uniqueness.

The house pictured has always been one of my favorites in the West Michigan area. It was sold earlier this year for $600,000 - a steal in my opinion thatis no where near the cost of replication. The house was designed by Dirk Lohan, a grandson of Mies Van Der Rohe. This home is probably the best example of international design in West Michigan. The exterior is a simple 42 geometric solid while the interior offers a contiguous flow of space over four floors. The home is settled on 10.00 acres of wooded land with three of those acres being manicured lawn. Multiple teak decks are found in the master bedroom, formal dining room and living room along with the fourth floor rooftop deck. Every room has 12' to 16' glass walls which form the exterior walls of this amazing home.

What makes you think it's a living room, not a garage? :)

I love cars but frankly they smell of fuel, oil, and maybe even roadkill...

More importantly how do you pull a "I'm going out to the garage to work on my car dear." when the car is sitting right there? ;)
