How to be famous (or feel like you're famous)
Get a rare, cool car.
Not an old 911E, or even a really old VW beetle. Get a 4WD VW double cab. For a few years now, whenever I drive the Tristar, people gawk, point, take pictures, and wave. Every day. And when I park, they come over to talk. One day I realized, "Hey, this is what it's like to be famous." Yesterday, I was in kind of a hurry at the mall. I parked and saw someone who had that "look" and started coming over. I wasn't in the mood, so I looked away and hurried off to avoid him. Is it fun being famous? It's OK, but a bother at times. Anyone else "famous" because of a car they've owned?

![]() ya, no kidd'n! When I drive this beast around folks always stop and stare...and some have taken a few snaps! They ask me who I am and I just turn around, tip my Ray Bans and ask 'You watch daytime TV?"

even though the Fcar is almost 20 years old, driving it with a baseball hat on and aviators, people non-chalantly look inside as im going by...wondering who's driving it.

I've worked around enough famous people to know that I don't want to be famous.

My boss once sent me to pick up his wife's Rolls after servicing. I had the distinct pleasure of driving the car - slowly! - through San Francisco and across the Golden Gate bridge while other drivers pulled alongside and desperately tried to see who I was. I didn't have any advance warning, so I wasn't really dressed for the part, but it was still my 45 minutes of fame.

Get off my lawn!

My brother has a 54 VW bug as his daily driver. He weekend and camping toy is a 1972 VW Camper. He bought the van in 1976, and the bug in 1978. The camper just had another respray and refurbish. He can't drive it anywhere without someone wanting to talk to him about it. If he is in a hurry to get something at the store he drives his wifes Toyota. No one notices that.

Well, a '72 camper is pretty cool. People don't realize what a split or oval VW is. A friend has a super nice yellow/white bay window camper, and it looks awesome in our little beach town. Just seeing it parked at the beach lifts my spirits.

My mom inherited a Silver Shadow from her dad, who was a hot shot CA attorney. She'd let me borrow it .. so quite often it was driven through Waikiki / Diamond Head area shirtless in bathing suit. People were amused ..

I remember riding into Waikiki in my friend's 912 and smelling pakalolo. We wondered where it was coming from and it was coming from a green Corniche!

Amen. I don't know if I could handle something exotic like a Ferrari, I don't want the attention. Porsches are subtle and common enough that they don't get a second glance around here.

As a kid in the 80s I had a red convertible Triumph TR7 with gold BBS wheels. I'd say at least once a month someone would ask what kind of Ferrari it was. Of course I told the girls it was a Ferrari Mondial. One guy even said to me I'd better gets daddy's Ferrari home before I got in trouble. That car got me more attention than my 911 turbo cab.

What I mean is I get attention as if I were famous. People gawk at my car and talk to me about the car. Just because the car is rare and cool. It occurred to me that the attention I experience (through the car) is somewhat akin to the attention famous people get. Perhaps a pic would help.
