Kind of a harvest gold thing going on. Yep, that's the way I found them and it looks like the original factory finish.

Once maybe every 2 years I hit the mother lode. My day was yesterday.

You can see some tooling and accessories on the 3" thick solid wood bench. What you don't see is over 200 pounds of more tooling and fixtures below and on the ground around the machine. The place was a mess and it took me 3 hours and a forklift to get it out and in my PU.

I don't even know what all I have yet but I counted 5 chucks, 2 tailstocks and 2 complete multi tool posts as well as collets out the gazoo.

All for $500.

The South Bend 9" lathe will undergo a complete restoration and live in my shop replacing an inferior metal lathe that won't cut threads.

I plan on doing a number on the bench and making a perfect steampunk dining table and asking a grand for it. That might work here in L.A. Some of these things are pretty cool but I'm not going that far.

Nice lathe. I see a turret there. I expect you to start manufacturing widgets out of brass soon!

Well, Herr, you know me from the GJ and possibly my links below. For 8 years now I've restoring antiques and collectables mainly for 3 dealers and occasionally a private customer. I may use the metal lathe once a month and the wood lathe once a year, although I could find optional uses for the wood one like buffing, sanding, etc. Not too hard to use a wood lathe a little bit like a Shop Smith.

I sold an Atlas 10" metal lathe a few years ago and realized I made a mistake. I did keep a lot of tooling and I ended up buying a 7 x 10 chinese lathe which has gotten me by several times. In fact, it's t5980 3 in 1 lump and the mill part sucks balls. However, I can see it being used for some wood stuff, but if I can unload it for reasonable money, it's out of here.

HF hasn't sold those in years and the newish ones are just as bad and yet pricey. In fact, most SB lathes like the one I got go for 1500-1800 all day every day here in SoCal. It doesn't make any sense to drive to 2 states over to find one in a small town for a good price.

So, it works both ways: whatever I sell here gets top dollar, but unless I can score a deal, I can't buy from around here. So keep my eyes open for the once in every 2 year deals.

Bottom line is that I needed a better lathe that will make things w/o a struggle. Not being able to cut threads has stumped me just a few times but I always find a work around. Being a weldor helps.

I sold my dad's 9" SB knock off a few years ago. I should have kept it but I really didn't have space for it. Swedish manufacturer, made in the late 60s. I think I got about $1500 for it.
I remember the buyer was concerned about the lack of paint on the upper surfaces but he had a machinist friend with him that said that was a good thing as it was an indicator that lots of cutting fluid was used.

Picked up an new OEM GMC winter front for my truck from FBMP. $20. Almost free...
Installed easily and looks as good as a winter front can.

Just say it's an autopsy table from the early 1800's, suitable for use as a dinning table, and it will sell well.

Those block grinders have a cult following.

cmccuist 12-21-2021 02:12 PM

They really do. I've been collecting them for a couple of years now. I've got about 8 of them. After the holidays, I'm going to off-load a few. The 3/4 hp are going for $250-$300.

herr_oberst 12-21-2021 02:22 PM

Mine's a half-horse. Perfectly acceptable for my needs.

JackDidley 12-21-2021 03:55 PM
