Getting into Vinyl!

It started out as a whim on eBay. I'm a big Tom Petty fan and I noticed one of his vinyl albums was going for super cheap so I sniped it. One thing led to another and I found myself at Half Price hooks thumbing through the old vinyl. I walked out with a couple other Heartbreakers albums, some Clapton, Billy Joel and James Taylor. I just bought a Hendrix album off eBay today.

This could get expensive!

Here's the thing, I don't own a turntable, lol!

Any suggestions?

Anyone else rediscovering vinyl?

My Son is a music producer and he has never heard a record played on a turntable. I love vinyl and I am looking for a "new" turntable.

I have a bad habit of picking up laser discs from our local goodwill.........lol

I have been listening to vinyl for awhile. Here is what I do. On the weekend go to all the garage sales you can find. I pick up any cheap turn table mainly for the cartridge Needles. That's what you will end up wearing out.

I rediscovered vinyl about 2 years ago and absolutely love the sound. A lot of the music I listen to was recorded on analog equipment and just wanted to listen to it the way it was originally offered. I now have a record collection again. Fortunately I kept a few of my albums from back in the day and wish I would have kept a few more. A couple particular were a Muddy Waters album on Chess and a John Lee Hooker of some sort. I also lent a friend Buddy Guy Stone Crazy on Alligator and George Thorogood Move it on Over at least 25 years ago. I'd really like the Buddy Guy album back.

As far as a turntable,I've been using a Pro-Ject RPM 1.3 w/ upgraded cartridge and overall it sounds pretty nice. Unfortunately I threw away a Techniques turntable quite a few years ago. The next turntable I buy will be a higher end vintage turntable like ones sold by Vinyl Nirvana. I also plan on getting a tube amp.

I got one of these last year. Works great with my Marantz 2226B. Keep in mind that you'll need a dedicated phono input on the amp. Any old 70's receiver should have one.

Vinyl is awesome. Going to see a friend of mine in Canada over the Xmas break who has a vinyl collection of over 4000 albums. Hopefully, I'll pick up some cool stuff.

I played these so much I took the scratches right out of the vinyl. LOL

We have a Music Hall MMF-7 table...probably 7 or 8 years old now. Don't recall which cartridge came on it but sounds really good for not much scratch. Play it through the phono section of my 1976 Sansui AU-717 Integrated Amp into some Castle bookshelf speakers. Search around...there are some cool setups for not much money. Careful though...it's a sickness with only one cure. More vinyl.

I need to go dig through several hundred albums that I've had stored away for decades. I didn't discover "Alligator" until cds hit the scene in the mid-80s, so I don't think I've got Stone Crazy on LP, but may have some other blues gems. I was more a rock 'n roller before I switched over to digital, but I'm thinkin' I've got some Tom Petty in the stash . I won't let anything go that I don't have a cd copy of, but I've got both analog and digital versions of several dozen "classics". Hit the used book/record stores for "deals"....friend's daughter has one, and they are absolutely overflowing with LPs at dirt cheap prices.

ps: Yes, I know analog "rules"...I just went down the path of convenience 'bout 3000 cds ago

Yeah, half price books stores have been my best resource so far, really have to watch out for condition though, some of the records look like someone drug em behind their car on the way to the store.

You'll eventually graduate to 200 gram audiophile pressings at $45 each. Get a good system dialed in and you'll want to experience vinyl nirvana rather than the sound of your nice cartridge slogging its way through vinyl once used as a dinner plate.

My next search will be some vital Beatles albums. I want to get the White album, Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Peppers to start.

Problem is people see Beatles on something and the price quadruples. Maybe I'll get lucky at a garage sale or something.

Just a nostalgia thing but have piles of LP's. Lost count and the boxes weigh! Once in awhile pull some out to play and enjoy the artwork. I have a vintage Pioneer PL560 turntable. Paid a good price back when for that.

Always had LP's and but when the market went to CD, I really ramped up the collection buying others used. There was time you could buy boxes of albums (ex: 50) at rummage sales for $2.00. Once the record player phased away, nobody wanted vinyl. I've actually had a few collection given away to me or it was the dumpster. People would be moving and without a record player, no time to piddle selling plus a PITA to move, to the dumpster they would go.

I love vinyl, am addicted and probably spend $300 a month on vinyl. I'm blessed to have great vinyl shops in my town. I also buy from soundstage direct.

Not sure what your budget is for a turntable but I would recommend a rega rp3

Because half of all new records I buy are warped, I recently invested in a vinylflat flattening device and happy to report it works awesome for flattening new 180g records

I also suggest you stay away from scratched records. Over the years I have concluded that just because a record is a dollar does not make it worth having if trashed. I only buy mint records and my collection is better for it as are my ears and stylus.

Always clean your records. If you can't afford a record cleaning machine, do not be afraid of washing them in the sink with soap water and sponge. I have been doing this for 30 years and it works and no damage to the label

Elvis is way worse on prices esp on the sun label [before RCA]

beatles on V-jay are very valuable too
as is the butcher cover even if with the paste over with the trunk cover

my best garage sale find was a beatles65 5 SIGNED ALBUM dedicated
I almost put it back as it was written on until I read what they wrote
their A&R chic had sign& dedicated it too for a friend [instant provenance]

values are lower for common albums and even lower for reissues
some garage bands with low pressings numbers are far more valuable then well known bands esp rock-a-billy or early psychedelic
as are kiddie efforts like tom and jerry [better known as paul simon and art G ]
or hour glass [better known as the almond brother]
