I run El Mirage about once a month. not forgiving at all...it's dusty silt, not a salt lake bed. The conditions there have been pretty bad, too. they got rain last month, and it didn't smooth out the bed like normal.

Wow! How does the driver walk away from that with only minor injuries...??!!! The G-loads during that barrel roll must have been off the charts.

I rolled bout 4 or 5 times at el mirage back in the early 80's, but I was a passenger in my brother's sand rail doin maybe 60 mph downhill.
Still trashed that buggy. didn't do much fer my helmet either. Worst part was hiking a couple miles to get my brothers' Z-28 and trailer to tow what was left of the buggy home. Yep, he towed it with his '78 Z-28. All 140 hp of it. |

I have met the guys who run that car before out there. Cool dudes. Glad the driver made it. If I remember correctly it's powered by a turbo K20 or K24.
Last year I watched a guy in a belly tanker blow over at around 200 out there. Lots of wind. Embraer- What do you run out there? I've been out a few times crewing for a friend that runs a mod bike. It's a good group of people.

almost always windy there. looks like he caught a crosswind.
i'll take whatever out there. fiat, Porsche, Ferrari....even kite boarding. I have the yearly pass, and I always go on a weekday, so I have the place to myself. ive taken my enduro out there, too. lots of fun, because there are the trails, too. the biggest issue is the silt. it gets everywhere. the guys who run the hayabusas and such are absolutely nuts.

Evidently not front drive either.

No, if it's the car I'm thinking of it's front drive- turbo vtec K24 dropped straight in where the old inline 3 cylinder and electric motor/trans used to be. Looked like it could almost be stock. Other than the plumbing.

So, it has Insight bodywork over something completely different.

Look at the picture I just posted. It uses the insight body shell, just with a serious, serious roll cage. It's not dropped over anything. The insight engine bay is big enough, with some modification, to fit the K24. The front clip is all still Insight body in white.
Before that they had a K20 in it, which dimensionally is almost identical to the K24. Here is an article talking about that: http://www.hondatuningmagazine.com/events/htup_0903_bonneville_speed_week_fastest_honda/

It's still hard for me to understand how that Honda driver could survive a crash like that with only minor injuries, yet this seemingly minor shunt was fatal for Dale Earnhardt.

Earnhardt refused to wear a HANS device. His head wasn't restrained. Easily survivable shunt broke his neck. |
