So, What Guns To Keep...If Only A Couple/Few?

Something tells me that this has been discussed before - haven't all gun topics been discussed here?
.
Thinking about which 2 or 3 to keep forever...tough one for me.
.
S/A 1911 A-1 Range Officer - for punching big holes in cretins.
.
AMT .22 Mag - for a survival gun (?) (less wt. for tons of ammo)
.
S&W M638 (shrouded) - carry
.

Rick Lee 11-27-2013 11:43 AM

I would make it a 10/22, a 12 gauge pump, a wheel gun and a 1911. Probably need an AR too. Anything else is icing on the cake.

jyl 11-27-2013 11:49 AM

Yeah, need a long gun for the apocalypse scenarios. I think a 12 ga and a rifle. Seems ideally the rifle should be suitable for hunting.

Don Ro 11-27-2013 11:53 AM

Yeah, thinking further...
.
My SKS 7.62x39
.
My S/A 1911 A-1 Range Officer
.
My Mossberg 12 ga. Defender Short Barrel

id10t 11-27-2013 12:01 PM

22 bolt rifle
22 semi pistol
FAL
1911
12 ga pump shotgun

nothing that can't be done with one of these

Head416 11-27-2013 12:07 PM

.22 rifle
12 ga
Reliable handgun in 9mm or .45

Works for me.

HardDrive 11-27-2013 12:15 PM

- One forty-five caliber automatic
- Two boxes of ammunition
- Four days' concentrated emergency rations
- One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine,
vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
- One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
- One hundred dollars in rubles
- One hundred dollars in gold
- Nine packs of chewing gum
- One issue of prophylactics
- Three lipsticks
- Three pair of nylon stockings.

red-beard 11-27-2013 12:17 PM

Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good time in Dallas with all that...

KFC911 11-27-2013 12:24 PM

I don't know how many "one issue of" is, but that don't sound like enough to me :D

cashflyer 11-27-2013 12:26 PM

If I could only have 3:
7.62x51 - preferably an FN/FAL
12g shotgun - probably a Mossberg 500 series.
a .357 revolver with either a 4 or 6 inch barrel.

And a truckload of ammo for each, please.

crownarch 11-27-2013 12:29 PM

12 Ga. pump with the plug out and 1 round in the chamber right next to the front door. Make sure your wife also knows how to use it. Just make sure she doesn't know how your life insurance policy is worth. Kind of a safety feature!

Don Ro 11-27-2013 12:33 PM

"12g shotgun - probably a Mossberg 500 series."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leaning against my night stand...in a pillow case (dust cover).
crownarch 11-27-2013 12:50 PM
Hey, if the night stand works for you great but, I would be cautious of having a pillow cover over it as it could get in your way. I keep one by the front door and .45 Para Ordinance under my pillow. No I am not paranoid, and not a prepper but, one never knows nowdays. I live in area of homes from 2500 sq ft to 8k sq ft and on acreage from 1 1/2 to 24 with private roads but, one just never knows.
flipper35 11-27-2013 12:51 PM
Around here the 7.62x63 is easier to find and less expensive than 7.62x51.
Don Ro 11-27-2013 12:52 PM
Not sure if I told this before...
.
I bought a few guns from a friend (FFL) way back when...a Viet Nam combat vet and a Sheriff deputy for years.
He suggested I buy a 12 ga. shotgun for home defense.
'Told me of a night when he heard a noise down in his big kitchen. The only thing he had in his upstairs bedroom was his .45.
Guests were sleeping downstairs...and that's where his shotgun was.
He slowly and quietly crept down the stairs...telling me, "I was so scared and shaking that I didn't think that I could hit anything with that .45."
.
Well, before he closed and locked the back (kitchen) door, his neighbor's German Shephard came in and my friend didn't even notice the dog
in his big (dimly lit) kitchen.
The noise he heard was the dog dumping the trash can in the kitchen.
.
That's when he told me to buy a shotgun. "..better chance of hitting something even if you're scared ch!tless".
72doug2,2S 11-27-2013 12:55 PM
Don't worry. If you like your guns, you can keep them.
Oh, the pillow case is just draped over the gun as a dust cover.
I've had a few times when I grabbed it...hearing noises, etc.
I live on an acre, corner lot, with 7' block walls all around.
But, as you say, 'one just never knows'.
"What Guns To Keep...If Only A Couple/Few?"
krikey, why not ask "What children to keep...if only a couple/few"
I have a lot of guns.
But if needed I could trim them down to any number, but would need to know what the number is.
Jim
That would be it right there. I think I would have to add an AK 47 to that list as they are the cockroach of the gun world. Plenty out there and ammo forever.
HHI944 11-27-2013 05:22 PM
I'm squared away with my Winnie 94, my P 938 and the AR pistol I'm building right now
Jeff Higgins 11-27-2013 05:40 PM
Marlin 39A Mountie, .22 LR. Fun factor, plus small game and vermin practicality, cheap to feed, easy to have lots of ammo.
Peacemaker, 5 1/2", .45 Colt. Adequate for hunting, self defense, survival. Most importantly, the gun I'm most comfortable and familiar with. Reliable and fool proof. Unequaled satisfaction and pride of ownership. Prettiest damn guns ever made.
Model 70, .375 H&H, Leupold 1.5-4X, back up irons. Hunt anything, anywhere, any time. Beat the hell out of someone even if it's empty. Reliable as a stone axe. Another very old, very familiar friend that I'm more comfortable with than any other rifle. We've spent a lot of quality time together.
targa911S 11-27-2013 06:11 PM
I like your choices Jeff.Spot on about the Peacemaker. No shotgun? Shame on you...
That right there is why my 94 will never leave my collection. It's reliable, accurate and pulling that stock into my should with my fingers through the lever just feels right. SmileWavy
Folks lose sight of how important that is. Absolutely invaluable.
When I snap a Peacemaker up with the hammer down so it blocks the view through the trough in the topstrap, I can thumb that hammer back and the sights are on target. Without even looking, they just lined up. Same with that old Model 70 - it almost aims itself and, at ranges and under time constraints where it has to, it does so well enough to work. I can operate either effectively enough (including loading and unloading) blindfolded, in the dark, one handed, hanging upside down from the mast on the heaving deck of a sailing ship rounding the horn in a hurricane. Drunk and naked to boot. That's important to me...:p
varmint 11-27-2013 07:16 PM
most of my life, every time somebody owed me a hundred bucks they'd offer up a rusty barn gun as payment. so i turned forty with a ton of crap in my safe.
vowed to trim it down. this is what remains.
all purpose hunting/zombie weapon
M1A with Zeiss scope
shotgun
remington wingmaster
personal bear panic sidearm
Freedom 83 in .454 casull
cool antique
Broomhandle Mauser
still need a decent all purpose .22 rifle. but otherwise i think i'm set.
red-beard 11-27-2013 07:25 PM
Ruger 10-22; I also like the AR-7
Mossberg 12 ga
Bolt Rifle in 30-06
.357 Magnum Revolver
.45 ACP - 1911
Sorry, can't get it under 5
Z-man 11-27-2013 07:40 PM
There's a saying, "Fear the man who has but one gun and knows how to use it."
I'd rather have one spoon that I know real well. Hard to have a single spoon that meets all the needs listed here, but a spoon I can't use effectively is as good as throwing a rock.
My 0.42
That said, an HK P30 for home defense in a suburban environment seems about right... ;)
futuresoptions 11-28-2013 12:56 AM
10/22
MkII
1911
870
M1A
If you can't do it with that... well, I'll tell your wife you love her...
Oh and I forgot, a FAL. It is an evil black rifle in 7.62 NATO...
And that's all I need.
And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray... And this paddle game. - The ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need... And this remote control. - The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need... And these matches. - The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control, and the paddle ball... And this lamp. - The ashtray, this paddle game, and the remote control, and the lamp, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The paddle game and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches for sure. Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.
But in an EOW scenario, you can pilfer ammo from the military if you use x51.
Isn't x63 an old S American military caliber and x62 is '06 ?
40 mm AA Gun, THE BOFORS CANON - YouTube
1911 I know it inside and out, It works for me
Remington 870 Do you need a defense shotgun? a duck shotgun or a deer gun yes! It's all the same change the barrel.
M1a 7.62x51 goodness, self loading rifle with stand off distance. It's turned cover into concealment in plenty of occasions
and a 22 long rifle to gather small game when you don't want people 1 mile away to find you.
