I put mine away today.....knocked the 6" of snow off and drove it around the block a few times just to see how it felt to drive a 44 year old car in the winter. :)

This work well on BC "Highway Thru Hell. It use a lot less salt; Region Uses Sugar Beet Juice to Reduce Road Salt - Niagara Region, Ontario

Put away......

I usually wait until the first snow/ice/salting of the roads.

Put away 11/1, battery tender and car cover on, along with fuel stabilizer.

By applying the beet juice to the road first before the road salt, the amount of "bounce and scatter" is reduced. This means less road salt has to be applied to the roads.
Very interesting.

I was always more intrigued by the Magnesium Chloride and rock used in Colorado... it got everywhere but not nearly the rust issues you have on the East coast. The rust in Vermont seems almost criminal... it destroys not only vehicles but infrastructure like the concrete bridges that crumble from absorption and rebar failure.

Next spring I will have to wait till everything is dry outside, because I live about one mile off of a paved road and salty mud is not good packed into the fenders and everything else under the car.

They salt the gravel???

Absolutely, and with the same stuff they put on the paved roads. I read somewhere that Quebec uses more tons of salt per kilometre of road than any place on Earth. Manufacturers test cars for corrosion resistance here. Never mind - you will find any marque of car here rusted out.

So, my Porsche stays inside till the worst is over.

That has always interested me as well. CO gets a ton of snow at higher elevations, but unlike the Northern states CO cars don't rust in a few short years. My old 1993 Saab 9000 Aero was a daily driver for 15 years in Denver before I bought it, the underside was as dry as many of the TX cars that I purchase. Why don't the "rust belt" states use the same stuff?

Our cities are built over the top of salt mines, it's cheap.

The Detroit salt mine was started 1906 and finally closed operations in 1985 after millions of tons of salt had been removed. The work created extensive man-made caverns under the city that remain today. The Detroit mine has a rather complex shape that is intriguing to geographers and that calls for some explanation (Figure 1).

Jerome, I've just noticed you are from Quebec. I love the old city and Le Château Frontenac. Back in the '90s, we camped our way up there, then stayed overnight at the Château. It was quite an experience of extremes.

They say it is really lovely in winter though I am still skeptical.

You will have to come up for the Winter Carnival some time. You can stay in the ice hotel - brand new every year!

I'd have to be pretty hydrated with vodka, or scotch. :D

Non, merci. The last time I was there - 3 years or so ago in February on business - it was -25C or something similar. We stayed in an auberge in the lower city & went up the funicular to the boardwalk. The icy wind was near-instant frostbite. Never again in winter.

Mine too......last Sunday before our monster effen blizzard and -24C temps!

In Alberta our issue with winter roads....besides the black ice, blizzards, and azzhats that drive those big, jacked up 4X4's with huge tires

is not salt ....but the gravel they use to improve traction:mad:. It's a given that you're windshield will need replacement come spring!...not to mention the road rash! The Porsches stay in hibernation often 'till May:(! But, at least they remain rust free!

Hey, cool! I just noticed that on this pic the orientation of the 5 spoke wheels is almost identical between the 997 on top and the SC on the bottom.....what are the odds of dat!:D
