Talk about feeling old!

I went to my dad's house to borrow a dang WALKER for my personal use!

That will make ya feel old for sure.

12 days from now I go under the knife to have my fancy new hip installed. Out with the old OEM parts, in with the new.

I have started gathering up the items necessary to aid in recovery now, while I can still do things.

I have the walker ready to go.
I have a cane (actually two).
I have the paperwork on the way for a temporary handicap parking permit.
I have a guy lined up to mow my yard while I am recovering.
I need to find some comfortable slip on shoes yet.
I need to find some easy to put on gym type shorts.

What else am I missing. I know a few of you folks have had surgery and been recovering before. This will be first for me. I have not spent a night in the hospital since I was a 5 year old kid with pneumonia, and all I remember is the cool plastic tent. My wife will take off for a week to help me around the house. I have never been an invalid before as an adult.

What other things should I get ready before the operation? What am I missing?

No AARP card ever. I don't want to PARF it up so I will stop there.
No Creme of Wheat, I prefer fruit and steak.
No Rocking chair, I have a nice rocking recliner.
No cat, but I do have a Dachshund for my lap.
Batteries are fresh in the remote.

There must be something else.

You'll need one of those 2-foot long grippy things on a stick, like they use at amusement parks to pick up trash without bending over.

Denture cream?
Cardigan sweater?
Moth balls?

Get one of the "grab it" extensions. They sell em at CVS / Walgreen's. Picking up stuff that you drop is not fun so they help... DO what the doctors says: If they say walk then walk, if they say not to pick up anything over 5 Lbs then DON'T. Don't screw up what they fixed just cuz you felt that you could do something. Get a back pack. Its hard to carry stuff if you are using a walker...

Do you have an extension hose on your shower head? Also will need a shower chair to sit on, (when they will let you have a shower.) You might also need an extension for the toilet. (Sitting down can be an issue).

Get an HQ set up outside the bedroom.

Get up and as soon as possible and go to the new HQ.

Write a journal. Pick-up some books now. I recommend 'Empire of the Summer Moon' and 'Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World'.

'Unbroken' is excellent as well.

Watch what you eat.

Best.

I always watch what I eat. I don't want miss my mouth!

Thanks Seahawk, I have "my" recliner in the living room. I will set up an additional small table next to the chair to hold stuff.

I'd start researching where you will be doing your physical therapy and hopefully find something close to home. Might even want to pre-book everything now and get all the paperwork out of the way too.

I'd also set up a bed on the main floor, especially if you have stairs in the house,

You'll probably need to wear some compression stockings for a while.
