Nelson Mandela, South African Icon of Peaceful Resistance, Is Dead
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/06/world/africa/nelson-mandela.html
Quote:
Mr. Mandela, who was 95, served just one term as South Africa’s president and had not been seen in public since 2010, when the nation hosted the soccer World Cup. But his decades in prison and his insistence on forgiveness over vengeance made him a potent symbol of the struggle to end this country’s brutally codified system of racial domination, and of the power of peaceful resolution in even the most intractable conflicts.
From the article there is quite a bit of turmoil going on.

Quote:
Yet Mr. Mandela’s death comes during a period of deep unease and painful self-examination for South Africa.

There have been many names of famous people in the past which I learnt about in school and wished I had been around when they were making their mark. Mandela is one of those few who was alive while I learned about what he did, what he stood for and what he wished for. A quite incredible man who stood by his principles.

That small dash between the dates 1918-2013 represents a lot. It's guys like him who inspire other people to make their dash mean something too.

A great man, to have gone through what he did and not bear malice speaks of a special character.

Rest in peace Mr. Mandela, the world is a little smaller today.

I don't blame him for wanting to end Aparhteid.

But he had terrorist ties that is far from my ideals.

Despite the fact that it makes us both racists, I am with Mr Bremner on this, though terrorist leader would be more accurate than terrorist ties.

He would have gotten out of prison sooner if he had been willing to denounce terrorist violence. Amnesty International, a well known right wing organization refused to take up his case. It has been 50 years since he was personally involved in any terrorist acts, but that does not change history.

How many people did Ghandi blow up?

As long as mankind places people that they feel are important onto untouchable pedestals, then their will be divisions, because there will always be those who disagree... If someone truly believes in equality, then there will be no victor, only equality...

Ties that 'are' far from your illiterate ideals. Go back to school and learn English.

Yes, you're a self admitted racist (well, duh ) and the man was certainly no Paul Walker, glorifying street racing to line his pockets and staging tax writeoff charitable events for Fillipino cyclone victims.

Rather, in the face of his accomplishments involving an entire continent, and therefore our entire world, he is denigrated by certain ignorant ass holes who post their stupidity on internet bulletin boards while cowering behind anonymous screen names.

I love freedom of speech. It's so helpful in identifying the true ass holes in our midst.

Truly a loss of gigantic dimensions. To many people this man represented the closest thing to Jesus ever walking this sad globe.

Well said, Markus, and rings with truth regarding all of the world's major religions as well.

Tell us about Jesus, Texass: grunting four words does'nt elevate you above the level of other self proclaimed racists posting here.

Of course, you may be proud to maintain your position as just that. As I said, I like free speech; reveals the dispicable in our midst.

I will go along with this:

The apartheid regime was a crime against humanity; as illogical as it was cruel. It is tempting, therefore, to simplify the subject by declaring that all who opposed it were wholly and unswervingly good. Its important to remember, however, that Mandela has been the first to hold his hands up to his shortcomings and mistakes. In books and speeches, he goes to great length to admit his errors. The real tragedy is that too many in the West can’t bring themselves to see what the great man himself has said all along; that he’s just as flawed as the rest of us, and should not be put on a pedestal.

RE: Nelson Mandela - RIP
Yes, a great man and many wonderful things have come about because of his efforts ...
But.
An interesting day in history.
I find it most interesting how history, news, media, propaganda and perspective can produce so many very different viewpoints and emotions. Or perhaps more so... "forget" so much history.
As a South African in my heart. (Born in the USA of South African parents) Later to return and be in the country until December of 77, my high school graduation (a very interesting time in South Africa's history). Being a part of history, learning a very different history, and then current events, than now remembered in South Africa and around the world.
Looking at information at Wiki and other sources once you actually read (sometimes between the lines) the whole story, you will see a more complete story or perhaps a story that is different from what you know.

Whatever number you'll see, I'll expect it'll be meaningless put up against Jesus' 33 and Mandella's 95... **** off **** (you're pathetically easy, you know).
