Throwing the ball makes sense, and as you stated involves both upper and lower extremity joints, muscles, soft tissue holding elements etc. in a cross crawl action.
The surgery is very impressive. Maybe some more of the answer is having bilaterally equal control of fine motor skills as well as gross motor skills. I'm sure there is also some differences in brain makeup or at least the way the 2 hemispheres of the brain communicate in truly ambidextrous people. Interesting topic.
