A brother and sister live in Kent / Akron near me. Visit? Not often. See them? lots.
I fix stuff so the phone rings a-plenty. Works out ok. Another sister in Gastonia/Charlotte, near my folks. Three times a year I go see the folks and at least go out to eat with my sister's family. If my folks were not there, I would say it would be an every five year thing.

Brother, lives a plane ride away.
See him a couple of times a year. Speak regularly. Sister who has not called in years. Pretty much all communication has stopped. She bailed on brothers wedding because her cat was sick. Last time I spoke to her she apologized up and down about dropping off the face of the planet. That was 2 years ago. No idea WTF is her deal. Did not even bother inviting her to my daughters Bat Mitzvah, no reason to add drama to an otherwise happy day.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I just sent my 2 brothers an email asking what they would like to see as a standard for IN PERSON visits. They are both married so I also included a question about a 'guys-only' get together...camping trip or some other destination of interest. A number of years ago when my oldest brother (who lives in VA) got remarried, all 3 of us went to visit Dad's grave in Hampton. Then we went back to our old neighborhood...our old house....and schools....that was cool...just us. I miss that.

As we all get older the opportunities reduce, so as often as possible.
I doubt I will ever regret seeing my family too much, but will definitely regret not seeing them enough.

"What are your expectations for FAMILY visits?"
Alcohol, and lots of it.

Since my wife's mother and my mother passed way and we are all in our sixties we do not visit much. Our mothers used to be the glue that kept us together by having meals at home or in restaurants. That used to be the time to visit with siblings. Not so much anymore.
My sister lives in the UK so it involves an eight hour flight. My wife's siblings are spread across the country but we do visit occasionally. There are no expectations. If it happens it happens... ![]() |

My parents lived here in town. Now that my parents are dead I doubt my brother will be back up this way anytime soon.

My three brothers and I all live within 10 min of each other. We probably see each other 1-4 times per month. It would probably be more if it weren't for the wives !

Most of my family lives in Tucson, AZ; I live about an hour from there. We always did Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter and Mom at Dad's house, so saw them there, and occasionally at niece/nephew birthdays. Visited mom/dad fairly often because they always needed me to fix their electronic crap, or help dad do projects around the house/yard (annoyed me a bit that the people who lived 10 minutes from them never came to help, but I was "expected" to drive an hour each way to help out...).
Parents retired and moved to Tennessee last year. I'd be surprised if I ever see them or my brothers/sisters again. When my parents moved, my mom (step-mom, really) asked when I was going to bring my kids out to visit them, and I told her probably never; I hate Tennessee. If ya can't tell, I'm not especially close to my family...

We are all dispersed.
Of my two older sisters, the one just 18 months older than me were and remain extremely close. We talk once a month and see each other twice a year. Barb is also very close to my wife and daughter and they see each other more often. Always a pleasure. My oldest sister is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enema; and there isn't a key. I haven't see her in 15 years. I have made overtures but have stopped...Sisyphus I ain't. After my Mom died my dad moved to DC and we spent every other weekend together for years...he remarried and has moved back to California so we're down to two visits per year or so. The cool thing is we email each other a couple of times a week...

Thankfully our relationship with my parents has greatly improved. We went nearly 10 years with no visits and maybe 2 calls a year. They live 200 miles away. Now we speak weekly and see them 2-3 times yearly. So happy my kids have the chance to know them.
I'm an only child but my wife has 3 surviving siblings. Two in town and one in TX. We generally do local get together dinners about 2x a month. TX family about 1x a year. |

I emailed her a few years ago that dad has dementia and always asks about her. I told her that if she wants to see him while he still remembers her it should be soon. No response. She hasn't called or visited him in years. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last week. After talking to all our friends and family I picked up the phone to call my sister but never dialed. I guess I don't feel like the call would matter. She feels no family obligations or connection at all. No childhood trauma. No abuse. She's a brilliant underachiever. Lost a decade or two to drugs and the life that goes with it. I miss her. Wish we could talk sometimes.
