Driving an early 70's 365 Daytona was one of the highlights of driving several older Ferrari cars, but it made me appreciate my '72 911 all the more. The Dino is still on my list.

I remember stepping into the local dealership to get a brand new Maranello. Had everything I wanted, right color, chairs (Ferrari speak for seats) and number of cylinders.

Then, my friend (who has owned 11 of them since I've known him) says "before you sign the slip, are you ready to set aside a minimum of US$1/mile for service? That is the minimum a Ferrari will cost not considering tires, regular services, etc".

I went to the Lexus dealership got me a GS400 and bought another 1969 911S instead.

If you think of it, US$1 is the bare minimum since each 15K mile service used to be US$15K.

$.50/mile is I think the normal that the government allows for deductions when it comes to travel taxes, so the Ferrari is only 200% of the government allowed normal.

I also think if driven regularly, the service schedule on quite a few things would change to lower per mile.

Then there is the fact you could sell that 550 today, for about what it cost brand new. Not many cars can do that. A Ferrari though, needs to be something you buy when you are in a place where if it disappeared into nothingness, life would move on.

If your friend was paying $15k for a service, he was paying too much. Most people don't put 15k miles on them between majors, so it's probably a wash.

I've owned many cars where depreciation was much higher than a buck a mile, so that doesn't really phase me.

That gubmint number takes into account all costs including purchase, depreciation, operation, insurance, maintenance etc.

The number suggested for the ferrrrrari is 50 cents per mile for just maintenance. And the maintenance schedule is based on miles so I don't see driving more miles as bringing the cost down much.

If they made them better instead of making them fragile, that cost would go down.
How many ferraris do you see being used as daily drivers with more than 100k miles on them?
200k miles?
300k miles?

NONE!

They'd turn to dust long before that.
A ferrrrari with 50k miles on it is often considered a high mileage vehicle, not worth as much because it's nearly used up. Due for full restoration.

But we see Porsches lasting that long all the time.

That's because Porsches are designed using LOGIC instead of EMOTION.

I could afford to buy almost any ferrari out there, but I never would because I would consider that a dumb and irresponsible move. YMMV

A friend who owned an Enzo tried to tell me that I should buy an Enzo NOW. I didn't listen to him. They were around 800K at the time. They are now 3.5m on up.

I drove this one from a 2011 event to it's home at 10 PM in the rain for 6 glorious miles. I don't seriously want to own one, but I love driving other peoples.
