Eating right. Veggies

I've really improved my diet. No fast food. Rare restaurant visits at all. Zero processed food. I eat red meat once a week. Vegetarian when I can. I have vowed to cover half my plate with veggies. Breakfast is stet cut outs every work day.

If I cook spaghetti. I make the simple tomato sauce. Whole wheat pasta. And in the sauce I will wilt giant handfuls of kale or something. I use my food processor a lot more now.

Tonight. Cod tacos. Homemade pico de gallo, a simple slaw of diced Brussels sprouts, kale, and cabbage. Dressed with hot sauce and non fat yogurt. Oh. I made my own hot sauce. I only ate about 4 oz of fish.

I feel way better now. No food comas. More energy. Biological functions at all GO!

I love the idea of getting rid of processed foods, but bread, pasta, etc is so hard to cut out!

Looks good. And I enjoy eating that s*** but I get an insatiable craving for something evil. Honestly I'm almost crawling up the wall for something with colorings , artificial flavorings and sugar.

I've cut out most sugar and sweets since Nov. I used to go through 2-4 pints of ice cream a week. I've increased my fiber intake as well, mostly through legumes and fruits and veggies.

Good stuff

Load up on Egyptian Spinach Clif, great in salads, on sandwiches or cooked! We have also increased our Kale consumption as well.

That looks tasty Cliff! Ever since finding out late last year that I have high cholesterol, I've tried to be smarter about what I eat. The only freezer meals I eat are low calorie Lean Cuisine type lunches at work, no creamy dairy like sour cream and cheese, no fatty meats like pepperoni, more salads and soup, wheat bread only, hummus and pita chips for a snack, etc. I LOVE homemade stuff like guacamole and pico, toss some onto a salad with cooked fajita chicken and I'm a happy man. Probably my biggest weakness is beer, I'm trying to drink more light beer and mix a drink for a nightcap as opposed to grabbing a Spaten.

Day 11 of the "whole30". Feel great. Dropped 10 lbs. takes some planning, eating crappy is way too easy.

Being married to a retired dietician I know what it's like. I used to have high cholesterol and was offered pills to control it. I declined and now eat more healthy foods.Bad cholesterol level is down. We read food labels and wifey decides what is acceptable in terms of fat and sugar.

We eat low fat cheese, low or no fat yogurt and try and stick to whole grain bread. My wife does all the cooking as she does not like what I cook. I am a lucky man!G

I say food/diet conversations account for 25% of the discussions at the local cigar lounge.

I don't know if this focus of energy on the topic comes with age or if more people in general are become more aware of their diet.

From what I can tell in my small group of contacts it crosses age groups, young people perhaps being more aware.

I like to snack on butter but totally get feeling "light" when eating a low fat, hi-veggie diet.

Looks tasty! Good for you. I'm doing low carb and the Cobb salad has become a staple for me. After cutting out the crap food, I became strangely aware of how good real food tastes. I'll have an occasional IPA but mainly vodka and a zero carb mixer.

Also, anyone else noticing the adverts saying "made without corn syrup"? I think people are finally getting it.

Yep, I have gone 90% non-processed foods and we buy bread and pasta from local bakeries and specialty shops with very simple ingredients. My favorite bread is a miners sourdough with 4 ingredients: wheat flour, water, starter, and salt.

I will admit it is WAY more fun, and way less expensive, eating at home. Cooking used to be a major chore, now it's enjoyable. I also have the time on my hands since taking the plunge and relocating my office to home, so prep time and cleaning time aren't a rush like it used to be.

But don't you find breakfast gets boring? I know how important it is....but the alternating between eggs and oatmeal gets awfully stale. Maybe I need to break out of breakfast only foods for breakfast?

No. My workday oatmeal is in this. I vary the flavor by adjusting the dry fruit. Fast cook Bobs red mill. Steel cut. Add hot water, cover, and let it soak while my computer boots up and I get my emails organized. Been doing the same thing for prob 3-4 years. Weekends. No oatmeal. Ever.

I have a low calorie fiber one breakfast bar and a glass of OJ every morning, been doing it for years. Augmented with a few gallons of coffee of course.

My biggest challenge is cooking - I suck at it. Frozen pizzas from the freezer are always a temptation, so I have to find healthy stuff that's also easy to make.

Organ meats are your friend.
I'll take 2 lbs ground beef and mix it with 2 lbs ground liver or heart and use it just like ground beef.

My wife has been slowly (& successfully I might add) turning me away from my bad eating habits although once every other week I get my 'pineapple-bacon-cheeseburger fix'. Veggies are a good & very necessary dietary staple for overall good health - something that has taken me way too long to learn & accept.

Cheers

If you haven't tried this one Cliff, make it. It's really good, even on tortilla chips!
