Women, "the change" and hormone therapy
Does anyone have any good (constructive) experience with Hormone replacement therapy for women, more specifically "bio-identical hormones"?
Apparently, this is a new thing that's supposed to be better than the old stuff that's made from horses. I think the horse stuff may cause cancer and some other issues. Docs or dudes that know women? I don't think any of our ladies here are old enough to have been through the change yet.

My stepmom worked with rescue horses for years. Premarin is obtained from pregnant horses. These horses are horribly abused then slaughtered. It has been shown to cause cancer in women as well.
My mother had ovarian/uterine cancer, complete hysterectomy and went through menopause naturally. It wasnt fun. Weed does help.

One-a-day has a menopause vitamin/pill for this that seems to work wonders (like midol does when younger)...even seems to help even out hot flashes a bit. Available over the counter where you buy vitamins.
No, I am not a doctor, but this worked well for my wife. Personally, I would try other things before hormones. |

There was a scary, scary thread on this topic a while back. I hope I die young.

In my circle of aquaintances, each woman is different (isn't that a surprise!)
Some have had severe symptoms, (hot flashes, intermittant memory lapses, irritability) for a few years or as much as six years. What I do know from this circle of friends is hormone therapy does not eliminate outward menefestations of menopausal symptoms, it only seems to delay the onset of symptoms. When the hormone therapy ends, she still has to go through whatever is in store. I suspect how bad it is for those around her will depend upon your relationship and communication (big surprise there too.) Best Les

Steve -- some are FDA-approved, and some are not. The "individually compounded" ones generally are not approved, either because all of the ingredients have not yet been tested by the FDA, or because one or more of the ingredients is actually harmful. I would be cautious and safe, and insist on one of the FDA-approved ones.
By the way, in hormone therapy there is no such term as bio-equivalent or bio-identical. That is a marketing term designed to fool people into thinking whatever they want to think. It has no scientific meaning. __ |

Current recommendations are to avoid hormone replacement if possible and if you do use it, use it only for vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, etc) and then only for the shortest time possible.
"Bioidentical" hormones are a crock, IMHO.

There is supposedly a high-enough corollation of hormones with smoking and cancer that docs have been advising against this, for decades.

My wife hit it about 18 months ago. I don't notice a thing, she says she gets flushed once in a while but has an ice tea and takes a 15 minute break.

Thanks guys. Not really any symptoms to speak of, at least not yet, but se thinks it's beginning, and is looking into things.

My wife is 53, in excellent shape (kick boxer for over 20 years, so yes I am afraid), and she's beautiful (at least to me). She also went through the change a couple of years ago.
Here she is at the Simeon museum last year: ![]() Her (our) biggest challenge was physical and it started impacting our very healthy sex life. She gets the custom mix (wild yam or some such thing) as a pill injected in a butt cheek every 4 or 5 months. It works perfectly and we are back to being rabbits again. Her GYN recommended it and she sees a "specialist" for the blood work and injection. |
