What's the deal with $19/month donations?

Seems all those charities on TV for starving kids, wounded service members and who knows what ask "for just $19 a month so you can help......"? I did search to see what I could find and most sites tell you how to set up the monthly payment and such if you are a non profit and what info you have to keep, but nothing about the amount. Maybe it just sounds better than $20, I don't know? As for these organizations, I have been asking my ex military students, many who were wounded if they ever heard of anyone getting help and so far the answer has been no for over two years now!

Anyone have any ideas?

No proof, just a guess, all of the TV spots begging for money spend the majority of the money on more fund raising and salary for the administration. Just a small percent on the charity part. I give my donation money to the salvation army.

Price point from a psychological point of view, like $9.95 doesn't sound like ten bucks.

A lot of those charities give something like 1 or 2% to the recipients that they claim to be caring about.

Lots of executive overhead.....cough....
Susan G. Komen: Always the Worst
"The percentage of revenue Komen sinks into cancer research - remember this is by design "For the Cure" - has declined for the past decade, from 26% annually to 19%."

Plus trademark squatting (Robert Smith must be scratching his head).
"Last year, Ms. Tighe's Uniting Against Lung Cancer got a letter from Komen requesting it change the name of the charity's "Kites for a Cure" fund-raiser, a beach event featuring hand-decorated kites, to "Kites for a Cause," or another name. Komen later warned her against any use of pink in conjunction with "cure.""

Which is why my money and donations of goods go to local volunteer ran charities, where nearly all of the money goes to helping people.

I figured it is a Hugh says, sounds like a lower amount. I too only donate to local and in San Diego one of the best ones is old Father Joe Carroll's Neighborhood house as they do a lot of great things.

Remember the "Breast Cancer Awareness" deal/drive when the NFL players were wearing pink everything?
I read that the NFL gave only a small % to the cause.
.
Maybe they need the $$$$$$$$ for the multitude of concussion suits coming down the line.

It's a "psychological price point" that most people think as a trivial amount. as soon as you say "$20 a month", reality kicks in... How much do those TV commercials cost? That's the 1st thing I think of....

I donate to the Burn Fund. 100% of the money raised goes to their stated purpose.

It's not hard to find charities that don't use the money raised for what they say it is for.

" The worst charity in America operates from a metal warehouse behind a gas station in Holiday, Florida.

Every year, Kids Wish Network raises millions of dollars in donations in the name of dying children and their families.

Every year, it spends less than 3 cents on the dollar helping kids."

Does anyone really think Susan G. Komen, Inc, really wants a cure for breast cancer or any other cancer? Lots of administrators would be out of jobs.....
