Certainly looks it. And 98k is a deal - a rebuildable core is worth 50-60k.

Of course, if'n I were playing with these kinds of things at those kinds of prices I'd drop the $ on a quick flight and a few nights in a hotel to really check it out...

At $125,000 now with two days to go.

Question - why would you store an engine of this value with bean oil which, according to the seller, solidifies and requires a partial tear-down/cleaning after storage? Aren't there products on the market specifically for stored engines?

Bean oil? Like in Soybean oil? Vegetable oil? Are they nuts? I have never heard of this being used to preserve a piece of mechanical equipment, short of a black powder weapon.

If they'd have used transmission fluid, all you'd have to do is put fresh oil and fire the sucker up.

The writing oozes with arrogance. I would not give that seller a penny of my hard earned, even if it meant pushing my 356.

Cool - those engine are like art work.

Years ago I picked up this 356 engine block complete with crank and rods that was re-built by a shop in CA.....I have some of the specs somewhere and it's a matching case. I've picked up heads for it plus a NOS set of pistons, gasket sets, oil cooler, shroud, generator, and stand, and some other odds and ends but have not found the time to do anything else with it.

Guess it will appreciate over time - doesn't take up much space....

agree..the seller is pretty smarmy. If I'm going to spend 125K on an engine, I sure as hell want to know who did the work on it. And I want to see copies of the records PRIOR to purchase.

It's up to $130k now.

Something sounds fishy.
"Copy of build details goes to buyer -post sale." This is bizarre. "You buy it, then I'll tell you what it is."

Exactly. A good build is a selling point, i.e. more money for the seller. Makes me really wonder about the build.

The tilt-shift photos make it look like a 1/100th scale. Wouldn't be surprised if it turns to be "very questionable" after sale.

FWIW....there's a thread on the 356 Registry forum about this auction:

Porsche356registry.org - ebay 4 cam motor on ebay picture looks odd.

In particular, a member Joris Koning mentions this is the original engine out of his '57 coupe and he had been in contact with the seller prior to this auction, to try and obtain it for his car. Joris says in his post:

Quote:
This is not my engine. It is however the original engine out of my '57 coupe. I have been aware of the engine for some time and have tried to work with the seller to reunite it with my car. Sadly we were not able to put together a deal agreeable to both sides.

The engine was offered to me for $240K as the seller wants to sell it. I told him that this was more than I am able and willing to pay. We tried to work out a construction where the seller would sell my current engine and I would end up with my original engine. Sadly this did not work out.

My current engine has been rebuilt to an extreme level which way surpasses the current engine for sale. I offered the seller to trade my engine for his. This way he would have an engine easier to sell which in addition is also worth a very substantial premium. Thus he would win on both sides as he would get an easier to sell engine which is also worth more and I would get the original engine for my car.

I am willing to extend this offer to anybody here who might buy the engine. According to my calcs my current engine is likely worth $30-60K more than the one currently listed on e-bay.
That's a shame....so for me with this new information and as some has said in our thread this guy (the eBay seller) appears to be a real dolt.....

Yea, with that post above the offer to swap for a running documented engine the engine owner is an idiot not to do a straight up swap. There must be something fishy going on.

I guess I will not buy it.

Well....after some sleuthing....I've discovered who the owner is....and I have actually met the man.

Quite a while back I purchased a DVD from him with some vintage 356 racing footage. He used to live in the area and I met him through our PCA region.

Welcome!

(Click on the "cars" link to see the engine listed in the auction)

He's not a bad guy - but I agree with Glen - he should have dealt with Joris on that engine swap....
