I was the buyer on an eBay car auction after which I immediately got cold feet. Called the seller, explained my thoughts and we came to an agreement that I would not buy the car. I offered to pay for his listing fees or any other expenses since the car had sold in the auction. Seller was great, refused to let me compensate him, and we actually talked about cars for almost an hour. He re-listed it and it sold for a little more than I had bid so we were both happy. And yes, I was prepared to follow through on buying the car if the seller had refused to cancel the deal. Calling him and being honest with him saved both of us a lot of hassle.

LOL! My first thought was of the cactus...

It wasn't like he bid, won the auction and then backed out...

It was an offer and an acceptance ( I know,,, still a transaction). You're not out anything at all. The fact that he offered you a tener does not indicate to me that he's a flake. His message to you sounded sincere. Can you imagine if all of our mistakes were treated with Arizony Cactus Hardball??

Personally I wouldn't be able to accept his money for nothing. Are you out any fees if you cancel the transaction???

Well, I kind of wonder how to cancel a transaction where I accepted an offer. It will look to eBay like we're trying to do a deal outside of eBay in order to avoid the fees. That is, unless I report him as a non-paying bidder. I need to ask Mrs. Lee how to do this, as she's a power seller and deals with this a lot.

FWIW, I don't believe this guy for one second. He has guitar parts for sale on eBay at the moment. He knows what he's doing. If he really bought an uncut Strat body blank, he's totally lying if he says this pickguard won't fit it. Obviously, he can cut/rout it to Strat specs and it would drop right in.

I think the answers to the first part dictates how you CAN resolve this issue.

If you can let him off the hook without damaging your standing or otherwise being out of pocket for fees then sure go ahead and let him off the hook.

If the only way is to report him as a non payer tell him that's the way it has to happen. You have no issue letting him back out but not at your own expense.

Second part while irritating should not really factor into it. If he is pulling a fast one you'll likely just end up with more aggravation.

Just emailed him that the part absolutely will fit, made no mention of canceling transaction. Will see how good his next excuse is before agreeing to cancel.

Thought you said you had a buy it now and an offer option and he offered you less than the buy it now and you accepted???

Notifying EBay of him as a non paying bidder and re-listing it doesn't affect his feedback rating does it???

Why do I care if this guy likes me? I'll never do business with him again. I'd like to be able to warn others too, but with a rating of 560 it's not like I'm gonna deter anyone from doing business with him. I listed this thing perfectly, agreed to his offer and then agreed to wait a few days until he got paid. I don't feel like the bad guy (not that it'd bother me in the least if I were the bad guy).

Anyway, I wanted to make sure he knew he could, in fact, rout the body to accept this very common, standard Strat pickguard (probably a few tens of millions of them in circulation). This is his response. I think I'll cave now.

"Hi Rick, No this is not a stock fender body. It is a specialty body, cut and routed out of raw wood. Some African wood. And the specs are not the same as a fender. It is in the same style, but the specs are all different. I really don't want to get into a big disagreement or hassle with you. It is not going to work ! I'll play the Devils Advocate: Either he's a well-versed scammer looking to make a few bucks off a relatively-small sale, en mass, or he's a bit conky and messed up building a personal music project.

Most people don't spend that much time, building from unknown scratch, for the benefit of others.

Not that my opinion matters either, but I don't think you're "caving"...just being a nice guy from my perspective

ps: I don't understand how anyone puts a bit of credence into Ebay ratings after my last experience several years ago. A "power seller" with a LONG history/track record of 100% positive feedback absolutely tried to scam me on a cobbled up, POS $500 amp. Bottom line, he didn't get away with it, and his rating wasn't perfect after I got my money back either. It didn't take but a few months before his rating was back to 100%. I don't do Ebay anymore...

Rick-what are you out? Have him request the cancellation thru ebay, you approve and relist. Ebay refunds your fees, you sell again.
