Epix has been killing it lately
'Downhill Racer" with Redford, Hackman, Coleman and a period 911 "The Bounty" with Gibson, Hopkins, Day-Lewis, Oliver, and Neesom This movie, "Gallipolli", and "The Year of Living Dangerously" show what a great actor Mel is.

An early film for Liam Neeson, too. Small, but memorable role.

For those who like westerns....an oldie but goodie is "How the West was Won" with Spencer Tracy as narrator and an all star cast.
It's almost 4 hours long and divided into individual segments.

Argo, 2012 Ben Affleck drama movie. About a rescue of 6 Americans from Iran in 1981. Fact based movie, not a documentary. Pretty good but a bit drawn out. I did like it.

This is a really wonderful film woven around French illusionist-turned-movie maker Georges Méliès, who pioneered special effects in films back in the early 20th century.

Game Night. Comedy. First 1/2 hour lasted forever then it got watchable. Better than Golden Girls reruns.

I watched From Here to Eternity the other night- never seen it before. Really good, and quite a cast (that I recognized):
Montgomery Clift Burt Lancaster Deborah Kerr Frank Sinatra Donna Reed (I'm a big fan) Ernest Borgnine (a bad guy in this) Jack Warden Claude Akins George Reeves

^^^ BL and MC were great in that one.
Re: "Dunkirk"......Tom Hardy in that Spitfire...what an ending! BTW....that Spitfire landing at the end was based on a true story. The Spitfire was later pulled from the sand and restored: https://www.christies.com/spitfire/interactive/index.html

Secret in Their Eyes (2015) - Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts
Not your typical Julia Roberts movie. It only got 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. Normally I'm not attracted to movies like this but my GF wanted to see it so I relented... Actually a good movie. It's difficult to watch sometimes because of the content but it's a well crafted thriller overall. It's certainly a lot better than 39%!

I watched Tom Horn last night too.
I've seen it a few times in the distant past, but last night I think I actually got it. What McQueen was after, trying to portray. As opposed to yelling at the TV: "why don't you just tell em you didn't do it?" IOW I saw it from the character's point of view instead of mine. Maybe it helps that lately I'm feeling more like a dinosaur, the old guard in the new world. GOML |
