End of the mechanic? No. There will still be plenty of people who do not want to get their hands dirty.

Beginning of more headaches for mechanics because of "informed" (read: pestering) customers? Yes.

"After lifting the car, dropping the engine, removing the intake manifold and valve train, put on you Deutchdouche glasses and examine the head gasket. If the glasses do not indicate a problem, reverse the process."

Garage
Mines been sitting in the garage for the past 3 weeks. Something happened with the clutch and I really don't feel like dropping the transmission and xfer case to find out. Might be the first time ever I have taken any car that I have owned to a mechanic. After it's fixed, it's out of here!

Ok, I will defend it.

How many times have you research, like maybe on this web site, before attacking a project on your car. (or am I the only one here with an old PC in the garage just for internet access)

How cool would it be to not have to guess "is that the xyz valve, that I need to take off, or is that the ecu that has nothing to do with this project?"
or, "they say there are 4 bolts holding that on, I removed the three I could find, but I dont seem to be able to budge that sucker. Where is the 4th bolt?"

I would love DIY's directions enhanced with augmented reality glasses. (but I also think I would love a flappy paddle shifter in the car so YMMV)

Wouldn't it just be easier for them to make reliable cars?

You guys are so short sighted. The applications for this are huge. No translating a manual into 50 languages. No question about what part is what.

Yeah, it dumbs it down a bit, but most of the straightforward work it dumbed down already. This won't help diagnosis of an issue, but what about for other applications? Diagnosing HVAC, big machines, etc?

Ever have to write instruction for someone else?

The words dont get magicly dictated. Someone still has to write the script in all the different languages.

Ive never seen a factory manual that diagnosed everything and had perfect instructions. I doubt this will be much better. Just more of the same, only in tech toy form.

I was warned about this, I bought a used BMW with 60k on the clock. It is in for the valve cover gasket replacement. It is an expected failure at that mileage so I will roll with it but I hope it is not an indicator of things to come. The stealership needs these glasses as they have had the car since Thursday.

Yup, it's a fancy shop manual at this point. Cool tech, but if a mechanic needs that much hand holding while working on my car......I don't want him working on my car. It would be a great training tool though.

This. My brother used to work in the industry. Man, he'd have to train them on the new stuff all the time.

Like GPS, you don't need it to come on until you're 5 miles from home, but the first could times....very helpful!

Hope they are making them rose colored. I can however, see the usefulness. If you are not a tech, you simply cannot imagine the time and money that we have to spend on information . I spend hours daily looking stuff up.

i'm routinely playing youtube how-to videos while working on my bikes. it's the future.

the glasses are a gimmicky new bit of tech. but the principle behind the thing is already established.

Wow and just think I wasted all that time and the manufacturers money training me. I could have just gotten some glasses.......
Things like this are never thought up by a mechanic. We just want some room to get our hands in.
