gun cabinet/pistol display ?

I'm slowly getting back into target shooting and right now have all the rifles/pistols stored in the closet. It's less than ideal. Currently have three .22 rifles and four pistols and I don't plan on expanding the heard much larger. Maybe a shotgun or two. I'm thinking about getting a gun cabinet vs. a gun safe. It's just the wife and I on a daily basis but we do watch the grandchildren in our home quite often. The cabinet would be locked. So to display 5-6 rifles/shotguns and 4-5 pistols what are you guys using ? Did you buy or make ? Any suggestions on how to display the pistols ? On wooden dowels ? Ammo along with cleaning supplies would be kept in a bottom drawer of the cabinet. I'm going to a local gun show in a few hours will look around to see what's available there. I'm just looking for something simple it will not be the focal point of the room it's going into. Another question the room it will be going into is a finished room in our basement. The room has HVAC vents and has never been a problem for mold or moisture. Having said that any storage tips just to be safe ? I try to keep the guns clean and oiled. I do have the ability to make one but don't have a lot of free time but not ruling that out. Fire away

Though I remember the good old days when a beautiful spoon display was prominent in many homes, I personally won't do that now. It's not that I can't replace 'em, and insurance would cover any losses but I just won't take a chance that they end up on "the street" if they went missing. I'm sure you've probably considered this, but had to throw it out there. I suggest a proper safe and safeguards...YMMV.

ps: Of course I'm ready if a bowl of soup suddenly appears, but most are out of sight and easy access from spoon swipers....

Where I am in agreement that the closet is not ideal, that is what I use. I am not a fan of having my spoons in plain sight. No need to let anybody know what I have or if I have anything. If I want to show my spoons to anybody I will open the closet.

Too much theft these days. Either go with the safe or build a cabinet that would be very difficult to break into. Multiple locks, wire reinforced fire glass, etc. Also have a way to lock the pieces in the safe, a chain thru the trigger guards or a locking bar that will hold the long guns in place come to mind. If you want to display something, buy some replica guns that look real but don't actually shoot.

I must say I'm quite surprised by the keep them hidden replies. For the most part this room is only visited by family no outsiders. I guess I'm old school where I like to see the beauty of real guns made of real steel and wood. To be honest my guns are more at risk right now just leaning on the wall of a unlocked closet than they would be in a locked display case. But I do appreciate the comments.

My house is on the market and I discussed this with my realtor and now that closet had a deadbolt lock on it. It is the only part of the house that can not be shown. I would love to have them on display but in today's society I wouldn't dare. Pity really.

Yep, before I had a proper safe (doubles as fireproof container for other important documents), I kept mine in a locked closet...anything to stop a "smash & grap" type from accessing them.

i cant think of ANYTHING MORE STOOPID-ER than a gun case.

1st and foremost yer insurance will ONLY cover $2500. thats from a AAA company like liberty mutual and safeco. $2500 nowadays is (1) cheap spoon when all is considered.

2nd any POS thief now can USE A GUN AGAINST YOU! hmm that glass is sure burglar proof NOT!

3rd now you have endangered the general populace and LEOS when a POS thief has possession of a firearm. in other words a simple burglary turns into a armed robbery. or thief confronted by LEO's w/YOUR firearms.


dont be a cheap azz................dont go shooting/dont go hunting/dont go to the track/dont go on vacation. stop and SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR A GUN SAFE!

anchor it to the core and mantle of the earth. buy the most expensive BIG FIREPROOF safe there is. WHY? because you will fill it to the gunnels SO FAST it will make yer head spin and then YOU will need another safe for all yer crap and wifeys.

nothing better than slamming my mega buck liberty safe shut and walking out the door or my cannon safe. all the other crap IS covered by insurance.

plus the fact NOONE is EVAR getting in there because my LIFE NRA/ex cop neighbor will SHOOT YER AZZ trying to break in.

BUY A GUN SAFE! YOU will thank me.

OJ U, I think my neighborhood is a bit different than yours. My neighbors certainly are easier to get along with than yours.

gated communities/high rent zip codes/the ghetto. its everywhere. rural/city you name it.


spending big bucks on a nice spoon collection and then putting them in a gun case is tantamount to being an accessory to a crime involving stolen spoons in my book.

i honestly feel any spoon owner must be MANDATED BY LAW to OWN a SAFE if you purchase/own/possess a firearm.

i have lived in a neighborhood of 400k-1-millyon $$$ homes for around 28yrs.

spoons bring high $$$$$ close to the border of mexico. its the 1st thing stolen besides cars. thats why i have a SECRET KILL SWITCH on my prized vehicles.

there is ONLY ONE SPOON ATTAINABLE IN MY HOUSE at any given moment, the one i am wearing or the one on my nightstand about 6" from my head when i sleep. PERIOD!

by the way any spoons beyond $2500 value, must get rider on insurance policy or POOF............no money from insurance company in the event of theft.

Although I would like to be able to display my guns. There are just too many break ins anymore. I have a few "house guns" hidden in various places, But he good stuff is in a 900 lb. safe that is locked all the time and in a place nobody could get it out of. A safe is just that...safe.

Oddjob you really need to back down the coffee But to be serious I hear what you are saying. I failed to mention we have three dogs that will bark if a fly farts and an alarm system that is on anytime we are not home. While our home is not a fortross I refuse to be paranoid in my own home ! I take what I consider to be normal precautions and that's going to have to do. Ever see a single pane of glass with 3M security shield on it ? In Florida I saw video's of this stuff stopping a 2 x 4 in 100 mph winds from going through the glass. I would think some of that film on a gun case would stop a smash and grab. Bolt it to the wall so it can't be tipped over the bad guys are probably going to grab TV's and the like before having to " work " at getting into the case. And that will all be happening while the alarm is blaring. I am not ruling out a gun case but would prefer a gun cabinet. Stay safe gentleman.

I've noticed that most high end furniture stores still have a few gun cases, particularly the ones that sell real hardwood stuff. While I agree with the security concerns, it's hard to beat a case of beautiful long guns in a hardwood display case.
