Antigua is often pronounced as if it had a Q in it, but really it's a G. So Anteega, not
AnteeQwa. That's how the locals say it "Anteega" It looks like a Q because of having a "u" after it.
"
Having said that, The oxford dictionary says both ways can be acceptable, but the
former "anteega" is most often used.

Why do people pronounce the name name Richard as Dick? Why do people pronounce David as Dave or Davey, or Jenny from Jane?

You really want a fun one, try South Cackalackie instead of South Carolina.

No way. That's awful!

One that used to drive me crazy when I lived in Montreal and watched the weather report from Vermont - Montpelier, pronounced Mont-peel-ee-er. Ugh.

Or Calais, Maine. Call-us.

How hard is Mon-pell-yay, or Cal-ay to pronounce?

Where my mother comes from in the UK is near Norwich in Norfolk UK. There is a place in Norfolk called Happisburgh. Now to the uninitiated it would be called Happyisburg. To the locals it is called Hayesborough. Go figure! Norfolk in the US is called Norfolk but in Norfolk it is Nor.... and they say it with a straight face!

I went to P h u k e t , Thailand last year. Everyone seems to mispronouce it and Pelican won't let me type it. The locals say Poo-ket.

Some of my local favorites: Kuykendahl Road in Houston pronounced Kurk-en-doll.

Or Leakey, Texas pronouced Lake-ee. I was corrected by a nice old lady at a gas station who looked like our late-great governor, Ann Richards

I have family from Purcell, Oklahoma. They pronounce it "Pur-SAIL" But then, we are Okies and have only been walking upright for about three generations.

Hearing new local reporters try and say Monongahela has always been funny. Sometimes they sound like porky pig repeating certain parts of the word. Most just give up and use the shortened phrase Mon.

I have always heard it pronounced Ma-non-ga-hell-ya of Ma-non-ga-heal-ya.

Speaking of places with unusual or hard to pronounce names....this is a little OT but, apparently, it's a true story! In the UK

In the village of Erbum, in the town of Tillet, in the county of Herts,...a lady by the name of Linda Lykes owns a pub callled The Cock Inn. Here's her mailing address:

Linda Lykes,
The Cock Inn,
Erbum,
Tillet,
Herts
