Bad Day Yesterday..........

We lost access to our local shooting club range yesterday. The property owners decided to not renew the club's lease for this year. We (the club) tried to buy the land last year but the owners would not sell it to us. Now, the closest shooting club is approximately 35 miles away and costs about 4 times as much to join! I don't know what the property owners will do with the 7 acres that had been used as a firing range for the last 20 years or so. I guess they could start up a lead mining operation! I guess that I will have to build a pellet trap out in my shop and take up practicing with my Beeman Tempest pistol.

I have a free public range just 35 mile drive away.

Or, I can pay $300 a year for a range that is a 25 mile drive away.

$300 buys a lot of gas to drive the extra 20 miles round trip.

I thought this thread would be about a car falling off the jacks - you lost your range? MUCH WORSE!

OUCH! I'm sorry.

We juts lost our silhouette match range as well. The 200 meter targets (rams) are on an easement from the U.S. Forest Service, granted to the West End Gun Club decades ago. An environment agency determined the use of the easement is in violation of environment regulations. They shut us down.

First take away the places that we can use them, then comes the question why have them if you can not use them. Lot easier than messing with the second amendment.

It's West End Gun Club off Sierra Ave, north of the 15 FWY. WEGC is private, member only. I like Piru though (Wes Anderson's). Now we're doing the lever-action silhouete match at Angeles Shooting Range on the 3rd Sunday of the month. It's 90% Porsche Owner's Club guys. Come join us.

Our little range that got closed down was only about 10 minutes from my house. Dues were $70 per year for one person with family memberships being only slightly more. We had a 50 yd pistol range with falling plate targets for both centerfire pistols and for rimfire pistols and rifles and a 100 yard rifle range with a 20 foot tall earthen berm for a backstop. We also had moveable target racks that could be placed at any distance from 7 yds to 100 yds. There was a nice long shooting shelter with a variety of benches and tables and a graveled area in front for standing to shoot. Nothing fancy, but very functional. It will be missed by the 120 or so members that used the facility.

Our club was shut down over a law suit. Neighbors complained about noise. We have been there since 1966, the neighborhood was built during the 80's. They are loaded ($$$) and made it a project to shut us down. The town also favors the neighborhood!!! Just makes me sick... It's not about right or wrong. Since we are talking about shooting, I just bought a new S&W 45 yesterday!!!

I have a free 200 yd range about 500 ft out my back door.....no fees, always available, and no drive.

I guess Ohio has some advantages afterall.

That's a bad day? Your title is overly dramatic, I was expecting something significant considering we've had Pelicans lose their dad or put down their dogs...

That really stinks, Fred. It's getting harder and harder to find places to shoot these days.

My club, which has been in the same location since the '40's, was darn near lost just a few years ago to, of all things, a turd farm. A sewage treatment plant. It was really heartening to see all the neighbors get behind us and help save our range - an unusual move these days (although, honestly, we never did kid ourselves - they just didn't like the alternative). That, and local law enforcement get to use it free gratis, so they spoke up as well.

Well there went that thread.
and yeah losing a place to hone the skill of firearm use is a bad day. True it could have been a worse day but still bad.
