Do your cars really leak oil??

I was reading this thread

Any Pelicans living in Germany with US Spec 911s?

talking about driving a US car in Germany, it was said that to pass TUV inspection the car leaked oil, which lead to the ubiquitous "all 911s leak oil."

Do you guys really find that to be true?

Maybe I'm the weird one, but I've owned 911s (and other cars) for 25+ years now, and NONE of them have leaked oil.

That isn't to say that they've never sprung a leak, most of my cars have at one time or another. But it seems like the obvious response to that is to . . . . (wait for it) . . . fix the leak.

So if your car starts leaking, do you really just ignore it? I find that surprising. That means something on the car is broken, in a fairly significant way. Why not fix it?

The 944 does leak, so does the bug... And I've talked to guys with fresh rebuilds.... Yup they still leak.

So what, it's a little dead Dino trying make its way home. life's too short to worry about a few drops per week! Drive the damn things!!!

I have owned my 911 for 18 years. I have repaired many oil leaks. For the last 18 years there was never a point that it did NOT leak oil until now when I am in the break-in period from a fresh engine rebuild. Right now it is not leaking.

Oops....I forgot about my Exxon Valdez moment 'bout 10 years ago. Winter time, down for several months in the garage doing all kinds of stuff. Spring time rolls around, and I'm proud as a peacock of all my efforts as I'm backing out of the garage. Wait...what is that 2' pool of oil on the garage floor and the river that's following down the driveway? My dumbass had just put the oil filter in place with maybe 1/4 turn and got distracted some weeks earlier...live & learn...rut roh

Never a drop from my 87. Unless I am changing the oil & then I always manage to make a mess.

My 9-eleben leaks a drop from both drain plugs every few months.
So all told, maybe a dozen drops per year.

It leaked a whole lot more thant hat before I went through the top end a few years back.

My Disco doesn't leak or burn a drop.....However every time I turn around it has sprung a coolant leak.
My Series Rover Leaks a bit from the oil pan gasket and I've just been to lazy to change it.
The Lotus needs a new CAS oil seal but is otherwise perfect.

If she doesn't get driven for two weeks she let's me know she's feeling abandoned by leaking a few drops on the floor. I've tried to fix it two different times but she still makes her feelings known.

If my girlfriend's Mercedes stopped leaking oil, that's when I'd start to worry- that would probably mean that it has none left in it.

Exactly mike!

Bugs change their own oil don't they? They just leak some out and you top it off. Continuous cycle!

First thing to do with the bug is get a remote filter and block off the plate on the bottom of the engine.

My 84 911 used to leak like a sumbeotch but then I replaced all the oil return tubes and I haven't seen a drop on the garage floor for about 3 months now. I'll be curious to see whether it starts dripping again when it gets warmer.

I owned the 101 projects car for several years. I fixed MOST of the leaks. But the thing was the Exxon Valdez at first.

My 914/6 leaked. Not LOTS but it did. Just before I had the engine rebuilt, it threw oil EVERYWHERE. Some people called is an automatic rust prevention system.

Only when I don't drive it on a weekly basis. When I drive it often it don't seem to leak.

I hate leaks. My '88 Chev PU truck took a crap on the freeway this afternoon, (26 y.o. ignition module it turns out). When they winched it onto the flatbed, I took a good look at the bottom. Dry as a popcorn fart.

My 911 was the same way, once I rebuilt it. Before that? The Exxon Valdez.

356 daily driver 10,000 miles per year a drip a month. 930 driven 5-6 times per year recent major rebuilds every 5 years leaks at will but arbitrarily from different areas.

Mine leaks, I estimate, about 1/2 qt./year of engine oil from the nose bearing. I haven't decided to fix it because it requires splitting the case and I am too stingy, so I am living with it for now..
