The article Nostatic posted says "Gregoire did not end up getting arrested. He was released after 30 minutes after the supervisors from CHP and the fire department hashed it out. NBC San Diego says the firefighter could still face charges in the incident."

Well if he wasn't arrested what do they call handcuffing someone and putting them in the back of a police car? Kidnapping is what it is if he wasn't arrested.

Wasnt going to add my opinion on this because im too biased but...

First of all, at an MVA on a highway we dont just place our trucks in a spot to be dicks. Or just because we feel like it. They are placed in a certain spot for strategic and primarily , safety reasons. Mainly to protect, the scene and the guys working there.

Here in NJ, at an MVA, by law the FD has full control over an incident. Once we feel our work is done, and everything is secure, then we will turn it over to the PD.

I've run into a similar scenario a number of time with our local cops. Either refusing to shut down a road or divert traffic away from the scene. The safety of my guys takes precedent over somone stuck in traffic. I had one MVA one day on a major 2 lane highway, 4 vehicles invovled, 2 overturned extensive extrication involved, medevac, etc, etc... the cops had traffic running past us on the shoulder literally a foot away from our backs. I told the PD SGT he had to shut the highway down for safety reasons. he tells me no way. I tell him he has no choice. He says he's not shutting "HIS" highway down on a Sunday during the summer. We go back and forth and just about get into a shoving match. There was a number of the public watching so I stopped screaming at him and I told him ok no problem. I went to my vehicle got on the phone, called the chief of police and explainded the situation.
Five mins later SGT Napolean, walks up to me calling me choice words, and informing me that the highway is being shut down. I thanked him for him unwavering cooperation.

This type of thing is one reason why I put dash cams in our most used fire trucks. I had a chief once that needed to shut down the interstate for a short while. Ga. Patrol would not do it. Chief had a firefighter pull a non-charged fire hose across the lanes involved and told the trooper to do his job. Its against the law to run over a fire hose. Charged or not. Traffic stopped.
Vinman is right. Your working on a vehicle fire, that you have no idea whats in it, not to mention the 40 plus ways a burning car can hurt you, and you have cars, trucks doing 70 mph a few feet behind you. Your first response when you see something bad while fighting fire is to back up!

The cameras are a good idea. We have then in our newest tower ladder. will probably retrofit our other trucks eventually.

It may be against the law to run over a fire hose, but that wont stop a cop from leaning a road flare on a 1/4 mile run of 5" hose. ( yes he really did that...)

That's the same way they act when they're earning overtime to ride in a day long 1000 officer procession for a downed LEO they never met.
