Apparently his drug problem goes back a long way.
Parents divorced when he was 9.... did his first stint in drug rehab when he was 22, right after graduating from college.... just did another stint in rehab last year.... three children, never married the mother of his children.... died at 46 in the same town he was born in. Rosebud... ![]() __ |

Lost my best friend over 25 years ago to it. What I will never understand it the lack of self control or self preservation that resides inside someone that chooses to inject drugs. Again, an idiot for leaving the path of pain for his family and friends to deal with for the rest of their lives. There are surely many in his circle that are thinking" I should have done something". I still feel the pain of losing my friend...so I do know what I am talking about from experience...sad experience.

I realize that this board is simply a cross section of people and that many non-addicts do not understand addiction. It is antithetical to normal thinking to be so self-destructive.
I can help out with one aspect, though. It has nothing to do with intelligence and PSH was far from "an idiot". In fact, I'd be willing to bet any amount that he was smarter than the person who made that remark. There is absolutely no correlation between intelligence and addiction. Thinking that there is, however, is a sign of pretty extreme ignorance on the subject at the very least. This is not open to opinion. It's a very well researched field of study. |

Anyone can become addicted to a substance, not very difficult to do so and not a function of intelligence. But this is a tragic end to a fine career and most likely a good person.

What you do not understand is the need for something outside of the self to make up for a lack that the self apparently can't fill on it's own, in spite of success or the love of others. This goes far above mere addiction, which can be licked by withdrawal.
Some people will never be able to make enough money, and will never stop trying. This is a much harder hole to fill, and yet a lot easier to feed, especially with all of the connections and privileges that fame has to offer. He was a great actor, and I will miss his performances. Speeder, you seem familiar with the subject. Let me ask an honest question here- if we can feel a degree of admiration for the junkie who beats his addiction, some disdain for the ones that don't sounds understandable. Would you argue that the ones that lost the battle couldn't have won?

I'm sorry, I'm tired of everyone in our country falling all over themselves when another drug addict ends up overdosing simply because they were famous. There are drug addicts who die every day and no one blinks an eye. This guy ODs in his Manhatten apartment and suddenly everyone is talking about how a shining light just got snuffed out.

Some addicts contribute to society, others don't. That could be part of the difference in reaction. In the end they are all flawed humans who died. Which describes pretty much everyone - only difference are the flaws and how they play out.
