Those devices are designed to release the hot air from the vehicle's cabin.

If I'd only been able to get to my phone (in my jacket pocket on the back seat, driving alone), I'd have the picture to beat that for douchey.
Getting ready to exit rt 78, i had to tuck in behind a scruffy looking 944 in the right lane. Something didn't seem right about it....where the exhaust exits under the bumper, there's an elbow facing up, with a vertical stack attached rising up above the rear spoiler lip. Best part...there's a diesel stack flap to top it off.
Well set up, indeed.

Popular with some of the diesel crowd. Not uncommon to see 3" exhaust.

That's a bit much and the ghey, but hey it is that person's truck.... If they like it more power to them.

I have seen many local diesel pickups with 4 or 5 inch exhaust tips. Some are dual exhaust tips that are that big.

A friend of mine runs a muffler shop. He made the custom dual exhaust for my El Camino. While he was welding it up we chatted. He said about 3 times a year some pickup owner comes in and wants dual stacks coming up behind the cab area. He explains he will have to cut holes in the bed for the pipe and once the hole is cut there is no going back. They still want it done.

There is a mid/late 90s Ram around here with a single ~5" stack coming up from the center of the bed.

Only there is a driveshaft in the center of the bed, so it is offset slightly to one side. Looks utterly ridiculous, and awakens some OCD tendencies.

Nope.

There is one dude that I saw on my morning commute for a while that just blew HUGE amounts of black stinky black diesel exhaust. He made a total smoke screen. He had to be doing it on purpose. I just hope he smoked out a cop and got that truck impounded. I have not seen it in months.

The guys with the modified diesels seem to always do this. My thought - if your truck is running that damn rich, somebody did a piss poor job of ECU tuning.

Actually, around here 3" is uncommon because it's smaller than what most of the diesels are running.

Lots and lots of trucks around here have the semi style stacks. I've seen several that were run through the bed the way you describe, but I've also seen a few where the bed has been moved back far enough to allow the exhaust to be run between the bed and cab.

It's not uncommon around here to see exhaust on diesel trucks between 4 and 8".

I saw an F-250 once with a pipe coming out the hood like that pictured above. He flat smoked a Z06 corvette, literally and figuratively. He was running low12s in the quarter mile. He broke 12s and they told him he had to have more than just a roll bar before they would let him go again. It was astounding to see something that big leave the line that hard. He said he would launch in 4wd and switch to 2wd once he was moving.

Actually, if you tune for max power, you will get a lot of smoke on a diesel. Some of these morons may over-do it, but if you look at a pro diesel drag race or pulling competitions with diesel, you will see what a max tune produces in terms of smoke ... I am not sure if it is done for best mixture only or for added cooling etc.
