Why do sports managers chew gum or what the heck are they chewing?

I don't watch pro or college sports (except for the dumb bike race) but did see a portion of the Olympic games this evening. As I was watching the hockey game, the camera took a shot of the coaches and team managers. I can't help but notice they were all chewing like a horse in their suits. Is it tobacco? It sure doesn't seem like it judging by the way they were chewing. Thinking back, many of them also chew like a horse in other sports. Any idea why? Its not to keep them from falling asleep and they can't all have bad breath or like Bubble Gum?

On screen.
In public.
On the ground.

I catch my kid doing that he gets one behind the ears.
How uneducated can they be?

Yeah, why does seemingly every single athlete spit every 3 seconds? I never spit. Why do they? I don't get it.

I know some baseball players will take loose leaf tobacco like Beechnut, and chew it along with some bubble gum. They spit because swallowing tobacco juice ain't good for ya.

It's stress relief. Even Tiger Woods does it when things are not going well.

Playing with their balls or placing their dicks back in place or farting is ok in my book. Hell, chewing gum is OK too , I just want to know why they do it. I really think spitting is a habit. I know people who participate in endurance sport have the need to spit because they want to get rid of the saliva produced during vigorous activities but they actually don't have to get rid of it. It goes away.

There is one guy that comes to our autocross that seems to have a love of spitting. He is hawking loogies all over the place. I have always wanted to ask him if he does that at home or is it just something he does around a group of men. It is really gross.

It seems every time I see even 15 seconds of baseball they show some player spitting or chewing gum like it was flubber.

Basketball players spit on the court? That must be slippery and they can fall or do they not do it. I have never watch a game. Sorry take my man card, now.

I have read studies that show chewing gum calms people, some people recommend it.

Nervous energy makes their mouths dry. Chewing gum keeps saliva in your mouth. Chewing tobacco gives them a suttle high for better concentration. Spit or swallow. Most guys spit.

Complete stupidity IMHO. "Stress relief?". Really? I have plenty of stress but don't chew gum or spit in the office.

It kills me to watch a baseball game and look at the players behavior. Role models for the boys ...
