Guitar pedal question

I have a Big Muff Pi and a Swollen Pickle both on my wish list. I am thinking that the Big Muff Pi (with tone wicker) would probably do everything that the Swollen Pickle would do and give about the same kind of sound. Am I right? Should I take the Swollen Pickle off my list? Or Should I keep the Swollen Pickle on the list and just add it to my pedal board?

Oh my.... Take this over to TDPRI.com and ask. They'll have 90 opinions. I have a bunch of pedals I make them all sound the same with my crappy playing.

Have a listen to this. I use it running into my Deluxe Reverb.

My son has one of those (Fulltone Fulldrive 2 MOSFET) on his board and it's really nice, although obviously it's an overdrive and boost versus a fuzz which I think is what the OP is after.

I think the swollen pickle and big muff are both fuzzes, right? Unless you're into collecting pedals or have a giant board I'd just get one or the other but I do not have either so can't recommend which. I have the Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian fuzz which is fabulous.

Also I noticed your Floyd avatar. The Wampler Velvet Fuzz is supposed to get really close to Gilmour's tone and the Youtube demos I've heard were sweet. I have a Wampler OD that is great and they will be high on my list for future pedals if I want/need more.

I sometimes use a Joyo Vintage Overdrive, which is a direct copy of the old Ibanez Tube Screamer, but for 1/3 of the price. I've had them side by side and there is no difference in sound. But both my heads have more gain and OD than I'd ever need. I use the pedal to dirty up the clean channels once in a while.

Big Muff and Swollen Pickle are -similar- pedals. I can't really imagine a situation where you would need both. If picking one, I would probably pick the swollen pickle. Big Muff is a classic sound but it's a one-trick pony. Swollen pickle is a 1.5 trick pony.

What are you using for your regular Overdrive or Distortion?

Skip both and get a black arts pharoa fuzz. Much better than both. It replaced the muff on my board for good

+1. I've got an old Russian Big Muff and it does one thing really, really well.

I always loved the early Smashing Pumpkins sound (which I believe started off with Big Muffs, but ended up transitioning to Creamy Dreamers). Fire up that Big Muff and crank out some Pumpkins "Mayonnaise"!!!

Thanks for all the input guys! After reading through everyone's comments, I think that I should elaborate a little further....

I am very happy with the over driven sound of my 3210 going through my 1960 Cab for my style of playing, I don't really need a tube screamer etc... My pedal board will be very minimal...

It will have the following pedals:

Dunlop Crybaby Wah (already have)

Marshall Foot Switch (Changes channels on amp - already have)

Big Muff Pi (Will be on the board regardless, all my hero's had one and I want one It is currently in transit)

Tuner (I am still trying to determine which one to purchase, I want the toughest, most accurate that I can purchase at a reasonable price)

So there you have the extent of what I want on my pedal board. I sort of want the Swollen Pickle on there, but I can't decide if it would really make sense to purchase it or not considering that I will already have the Big Muff...

Please forgive my OCD

If I had a Deluxe Reverb, I would want that pedal as well... It sounds exactly like my Marshall 3210 Lead 100 Mosfet heads that I use!

The Lead 100 Mosfet is basically a SS version of the JCM 800.

Big Muff is a Classic and I'd hit it, but Swollen Pickles are for wankers.

My my that does sound dirty.

I've got several pedals.. a FullDrive, a Tonebender I built myself, a Catalinbread "RAH" and a couple others I can't think of right now. Haven't touched them in a while.

In fact, I haven't touched an actual amp in over a year, despite having several great, classic amps.

I went with one of these a while back. Super impressed... and I really don't like digital stuff at all.
