Shackleton, men were tougher back then.
Finished watching a show on Shackleton and his survival in the Antarctic for 17 months. I've come to the conclusion that men were tougher back then. Much tougher. It's not a huge assumption to make. Most tasks were labor intensive and you had to participate to survive. Today, you get lost in the woods for a few days and you are a warrior. Not sure where we are heading in the next hundred years. An amorphous lump sitting in front of screens and keyboards? Hopeful not

Ya but would they be able to deal with The Jersey Shore, Starbucks ordering, navigating the tax code or being able to figure out how to use a remote? I think not...

Civilization is a temporary state. Empires rise and fall. When the Romans stopped conquest and became more concerned with bread and circus, their fates were sealed.
I imagine that the reason that the population of Rome declined from around a million people just before the fall to around 35,000 in roughly 100 years was because many of the soft citizens could not cut it.

Modern conveniences have made us soft. Office jobs have made us soft. The evolution of society towards being so touchy feely PC has made us soft. I often wonder if a catastrophic event set modern society back 200 years, who would survive? Would I be able to survive? It's interesting food for thought.

True, but back then wilderness survival was a part of life. If you weren't able to support yourself off of the land, you died. It wasn't done as an extreme sport or TV show.

All you have to do is go to a Museum-say Machinery..from the 1910 onto the mid 60's .
The people were a different breed. There can be no argument.

Those are few and far between. Nowadays, we are raising a generation of pussies.

Now in 993 land ...

With childhood death rates extremely high, becoming a man back then meant that you were tough as nails already, otherwise you would not have made it that far.

If you don't think they were tougher "back then," just look at the old pictures and count how many fatties were in them.

I really think men are almost as tough now. Only difference is that if they had all the technology and comfort we have today, they would be pussies too. My AC in my cars do not get turn off once the temp reaches 78 degree. A corded drill motor? F that.
