The word problems were given to teach you how to think logically and apply the math that you were learning......what a concept!

Math is important and all, but how many people in the world get by without any basic common sense; practical common sense to be more precise. Ask the average teacher a simple question such as to point to the item on their vehicle that charges the battery - see what kind of answers you get.

Knowing about the alternator and where it is just knowledge.....it has nothing to do with "common sense". "Common sense" is, as Wikipedia puts it: a basic ability to perceive, understand, and judge things, which is shared by ("common to") nearly all people, and can be reasonably expected of nearly all people without any need for debate.

The point of the word problem is to teach you how to use the knowledge you have...to think logically.

Practical knowledge is what I meant - knowledge that you can use in everyday life. Which, of course, would vary greatly among the masses. A South African Bush Man, and a NYSE stock broker differ in their common knowledge. Maybe the only commonality would be bodily functions and how to obtain food and water, I don't know. That being said, in this forum, my statement before would (should) be common sense among us.

Also - I didn't think it was appropriate to cite Wikipedia as a legitimate reference :D
