Executive coach for a physician?
I'm looking for an executive coach for my wife. She is a physician, and director of a service at a large hospital. She is looking for someone to help her hone her leadership skills.
Any recommendations?

On a serious note....
I cannot advise on a coach specifically, but have her consider a few hours with a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant to learn lessons of those who have faltered. |

Above are good suggestions plus what about Toastmasters? Their programs incorporate leadership via speaking. Local club typically meets once a week. Each club has a different meeting time.

How about finding a mentor. You can go look for a senior person that you do not report to and ask them if they'd be willing to be your mentor. Nobody ever will say 'no' to that. Some companies even have programs for this.

Barb is a very good friend of mine and provides leadership guidance as well as speaking at various venues. She is a retired Navy Aviator, former test pilot and paved the way very nicely for the women in uniform who followed her. I can set it up if you like. Best.

not a coach but have been management. it sucked. the people who had my respect worked within these guidelines.
1. be honest. 2. be fair. 3. be humble. 4. be a kick-ass clinician before and after becoming management. 5. tell people they are wrong (or right) instead of finding some mickey mouse work around trying to spare some feelings. 6. Delegate good stuff...not just crap. |

Though I am perhaps a bit biased as she is a friend of mine, I suggest you contact:
Rita Ashley, Executive Coach Rita Ashley is a very good career coach. Read her blogs, etc., and see if she is a fit for your wife. She's also a Porsche fan if that matters. ![]() angela

That's a tough one for folks to pull off while keeping an even temper. Stability under stress could make that list. Not my strong point.

Dale Carnegie Institute has various programs but are more management and lifeskills, not necessarily healthcare specific.

Hiring the right person(s) is the key to becoming a good manager ![]() Edit: Barb is from Michigan, btw What I would also suggest, that has been mentioned before, is to cultivate a network as best you can among peers that she respects and can trust. That is how Barb and I met. She relieved me (military folks change jobs every few years) in one job and we were also competitors in others. But, we became friends and relied on each other for advice and council. She also had a large Program Office at Naval Air Systems Command the same time I did, we'd compare notes all the time. I liked her "check in" checklist (we both spent at least an hour one-on-one with new hires or transfers - which is an essential management tool: Learn about them personally) better than mine, so she let me steal it. That is just one example. But the key ingredient to becoming an effective manager, at least in my mind, is regardless of advice from a mentor, coach or peer, never veer from your core principles. Sounds easy, but I have seen failure exactly in that vein.
