That blue is absolutely gorgeous on that car.
|
They started bonding the doors and hood together. Carey says they are perfectionists in gaps and it takes 2 to 3 weeks to get the door gaps just perfect. Some of that is due to the doors extending into the roof line.

Work continues. Doors are hung (check out those beefy hinges) and they're working the gaps. The hood was also fitted and hung. Once the rear half is hung and fit, it all comes apart for priming, blocking and painting. Only a few more months!

It's starting to look like a 904!
Check out the "lightened" hinges: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406934999.jpg And the rear installed: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406935056.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406935079.jpg And finally, one more Albert blue inspiration shot: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406935126.jpg |
Whoo, I'm in love with that car already. Great fabrication skills.
|
Can't wait to see this in person!
|
There will be a coming out party!
I just love the lines on this car: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407084948.jpg |
Are you doing anything to improve the ventilation to the cockpit? I have heard that getting hot is a problem in those. I saw a Miata with a little round vent that was apparently from an airplane on the little triangular window in front of the one that rolls up and down. You don't have a quarter window on a 904, I don't think. I guess you could make more than one style of plastic window out of lexan without that much trouble. They slide fore and aft I believe, rather than rolling down.
|
awesome, just awesome.
|
I'm enjoying the progress pics! Keep them coming!
Do you per chance know the accuracy of the body dimensions of this compared to the original? Is there changes to "cabin" area for creature oomforts or left true to the original? I've really been interested in going down and paying a visit to Beck about these cars. They really look nice. |
Scooter, here is a link that compares an original to the Beck: Beck 904 -- The Ultimate Replica
Doc, I plan on fresh air vents from the nose dumping under the dash with a cable control to shut off the air flow. A/C is an option I didn't want. All gaps are set and the body is ready for high build primer, prep, and paint! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407600481.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407600497.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407600516.jpg |
So how does it get registered? As a kit car?
|
Depends on the state. In Texas, as a specially constructed vehicle.
|
Not a lot to report, but the oil cooler, rear vents, and headlight openings were cut and the fitting of all components continues. This is the "you have to build it twice" approach. Build it to ensure it all fits, then take it all apart for paint.

Fitting all the lights and it's starting to look like an actual car!

There's a back up in the paint shop, but won't be long now! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1409353597.jpg |
How about a little tail?

Hey 'mr'
I finally read through your thread today - very cool indeed! Also 'stealthn' brought up an interesting point: "So how does it get registered? As a kit car?" At any rate, I now have to clean up the drool on my key board. Cheers JB |
I love this build - I am inspired by your progress and determination.
Obviously time and Beck have perfected the fiberglass-to-chassis bonding issues. But I'm curious, if someone made one of aluminum, would it perform much different than the fiberglass? Especially now that we can drop in such a glorious powerplant as that 3.6? |
I suspect it would, as I would expect aluminum to be much stiffer. On Mr Reid's car, the strength is going to come from the frame, on the original, the body would to the strength to a greater degree, or that would be my expectation.
|
The original 904s were fiberglass bodies bonded to a steel chassis. For an aluminum body bonded to a steel chassis, look to the Cobra. Here is my 289 FIA Kirkham Cobra which is an aluminum body bonded to a steel chassis via forming and rivets.

Last of the fiberglass work, installing headlight buckets:

BTW, I sold the cobra to buy the 904.
A man has to have priorities! |
High build primer on the body!

Fantastic! Details are getting exciting!
Does this car have a plexi windshield or a glass windshield? |
The windshield and side windows are safety glass.
Work continues on the window frames and engine grill: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1411179234.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1411179250.jpg |
I always thought the 904 was aluminum body, like the 550, you learn something every day, sometimes two or three things.
|
The fiberglass body like the original was one of the things that made it more appealing. However, I've built a bunch of replicas:
1963 Austin Healey 3000 (Classic Roasters Sebring MX) 1941 Willys Coupe (Outlaw Performance) 1954 Ferrari California swb (Precision Engineering) 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe (Factory Five Racing) 1965 Ford GT40 (Race Car Replicas) 1964 Shelby Cobra 289FIA (Kirkham) |
Time for an update!
Oil cooler and ducting installed. This is cool as the oil cooler air flows through the front of the cooler and out the wheel wells to the brakes: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413039884.jpg Pedal set all welded up and assembled: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413039925.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413040001.jpg Dash fit up: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413040067.jpg And finally, a-arms all welded up: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413040129.jpg |
The dash itself is now covered and ready to go:

Getting Closer!!!
|
Last little details before heading to the paint shop!
Rear latches installed: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1414789863.jpg Fuel, oil, and brake lines run and secured: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1414789914.jpg Suspension parts ready: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1414789963.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1414790033.jpg Just a reminder on the color: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1414790101.jpg |
Thanksgiving update!
Not really much to report. Gas tank complete and hole cut in hood for the filler. The car is now at the paint shop and should be painted by end of December. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417273557.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417273577.jpg Polished up the window frames and trim: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417273616.jpg |
This is a very exciting day, she's out of the paint booth!
The color is Albert blue and it looks darker in these pictures. Once it's color sanded I'll post some pictures outside in the sun. I'm getting excited now! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1418171921.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1418171939.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1418171957.jpg |
I hope you've got a set of Biodes/Ampliluxes for it.
|
Wow Mark... just wow. That is one sexy beast!
|
One of these days, we're gonna have to talk about this one:
1963 Austin Healey 3000 (Classic Roasters Sebring MX) I've always dreamed of building a healey with an M3 straight six engine. |
Yeah, that Classic Roadsters Sebring MX with a Mustang 5.0 in the early 90's was a monster!
However, the kit was one of the worst I've ever seen. |
Looking really good. The craftsmanship is seriously impressive.
|
Beautiful!!!
