Thanks, Berk. I'll call this week. I want to drop the engine in next weekend and could use 7 or 8 hands!

Glad to hear you are progressing!

mreid 10-25-2015 04:42 PM

Well, got a lot done today!

Engine is all together and I even installed the fuel pressure regulator in the car and started making the engine wiring harness. Just need to trim, crimp, and install the plug wires and in she goes. Ordered the MSD boxes and coils, but still need to fab oil and fuel lines. Pics:

Whoa! 40s or 46s?

mreid 10-30-2015 05:19 PM

46s. Hope to drop it in this weekend.

mreid 10-31-2015 03:20 PM

Well, I finished the fuel system install. Unfortunately, I bought a flywheel for an 80 3.0 thinking it was the same as my 78 crank. No such luck. Found the correct 78, but won't have it until next week, so engine doesn't go in this weekend. However, here's a pic of the PMO regulator and fuel filter all plumbed:

Wow it finally hit me, been watch this beautiful engine build coming together. But didn't realize that it is going into the 904 that been coming along.
That is going to be sooo nice.
Can't say why it alluded me but what a great moment when that last pic cleared the air for me. SWEET COMBO!

Cheers Richard

You did not get flooded or anything did you? I seem to remember you were near SA

mreid 11-01-2015 10:17 AM

We got slammed with all the rain, but my house is on top of a hill. On Friday I looked out the front door at about 7:00am. These stone stairs come down from about 20 feet up. The water was pouring down like niagra falls! The second pic is the front porch. The water was about 9 inches deep and rising as the drains in the front yard couldn't keep up, but no problems.

No flywheel, so plug wires and engine harness. Check!

There's going to be a video of some "sweet music", right? ;)

mreid 11-03-2015 04:56 PM

We can only hope!

mreid 11-06-2015 10:05 AM

The correct flywheel showed up today and went right in followed by the clutch!

The $100 20 ton harbor freight press earns its keep once again.

nice but the cheesehead at 2 o'clock looks under-torqued by 2-3 ft lbs, give or take.

mreid 11-08-2015 11:06 AM

Damn, I though I got them all. Thanks for the assist!

So, how many jacks does it take to install an engine?

Three, actually a floor Jack, an ATV Jack, and an engine hoist. I think the thing that is killing me the most on this builds are the various nuts, bolts, and other hardware. Anyway, here are some pics:

Progress! Are you sitting there making engine noises yet?

mreid 11-08-2015 12:50 PM

Heck, I've been doing that for months. Once my wife caught me sitting in the car driving the Ring in my mind, including engine and tire noises. I told her I was preparing the car and speaking to it in its language, you know like baby talk...she told all her friends.

lendaddy 11-08-2015 01:19 PM

Very cool, but damn you're trusting of those straps :)

mreid 11-08-2015 03:45 PM

They're rated at 1,000 lbs., just keep them away from sharp edges.

Shaun @ Tru6 11-09-2015 04:33 AM

I gotta say, it's so refreshing to see a build exactly done right. Well done.

JeremyD 11-09-2015 04:34 AM

was thinking the same thing

CJFusco 11-10-2015 04:17 AM

I just discovered this thread. So, so cool; this is my idea of a dream project, although I don't quite have the level of technical know-how to do it all myself. The most difficult job I've tackled is a head gasket job on a 944 Turbo. Still, maybe some day I'll get brave. Maybe at that point I'll come back to this thread for inspiration.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

My grandson is only 3 days old and my daughter tells me he can't come to my house until I install a pool fence. I called Pool Guarding, Katchakid, and ChildSafe…ALL $4,000!!!!

This was my new project yesterday. Easy peasy and all in for $1,387. One trip to home depot for ten 12' fence sections, drill guide, 5/8"x18" masonry bit, and 10 hours measuring, remeasuring, remeasuring again, drilling, and done! :D

$4,000??? What a rip!

Your daughter is smart. Many years ago a fellow worker lost his 4 year old son after drowning in his unfenced pool. Apparently he could swim but it was perhaps one of those freak accidents where he slipped into the pool....

$1400 is cheap insurance.

JeremyD 11-11-2015 11:11 AM

a 3 day old isn't getting into the pool unless someone throws them in - But yes - pool fence is good insurance.

jpnovak 11-14-2015 08:16 PM

Mark, Is that engine running yet?

That's kind of what I was thinking... for people with pools, isn't it allowable to lock the back door to keep children away?

Yes but children grow up and when they are old enough they can slip out the door and get into all kinds of trouble....

Nope. I've had kids and their friends in town for Fakesgiving (my daughters term for Thanksgiving celebrated early). I still need to buy oil line fittings and install ignition components. I'm also waiting on silly hardware bits because I'm anal about how fasteners look!

I was thinking more along the lines of a keyed lock for a sliding glass door for example. It depends on the house how well that would work.

I like what Craig T has done. This way your child can go outside and you don't have to worry about your child falling into the pool.

MFX 11-17-2015 02:10 AM

In Australia you have to have a pool fence by law.

Loving the build by the way. Keep it up.

mreid 11-24-2015 03:23 PM

Ignition is done. Need some fittings and remote oil filter mount to finish the oil system, then fab up a throttle cable connection and I'm done. Only a couple more weeks!

Hmm, upgraded my iPad and now pelican says all my pictures don't have the correct extension to post. A problem for later.

mreid 12-06-2015 01:39 PM

Finally was able to drill two 5/16 holes in the stainless engine mount bracket. The damn thing was work hardened and I couldn't get a straight shot with the engine in the way. I'm embarrassed to say it took me two days! Mainly due to bits breaking and runs to Lowes.

There was no provision for another oil filter and since oil is the life blood, I want plenty of flow. This System 1 filter is reusable and has a 1" inlet with 12an fittings. I purchased a 22mm to 12an adapter from BAT that screwed right into the engine case. I now have 12an lines, through the filter and front oil cooler. I would have preferred to have the filter after the cooler, but space limitations keep it on the outlet side of the engine before the front cooler.

All I have left is the clutch linkage (I can't find the clutch lever), throttle linkage (the cable is installed, but I have to fab up a bracket), and adjust the shifter. Getting there! Still can't upload pice since I upgraded iOS on my iPad.

mreid 12-25-2015 06:29 AM

Gave it a good wash and wax, filled the engine and 915, and found a major oil leak in the 915 where the tail housing bolts to the gear case (what a pain). Now considering options to fix the leak, but all ready for first start. Even got a GoPro for Christmas!

Just awesome project. I am insanely jealous. The color, wheels, everything. Let's see some action videos soon.
