Best alarm solution for garage??
Hey guys, I have been realizing that I have a lot of $$ worth of stuff in my garages (two attached garages on my house, both two car), especially the one where I have all my tools, etc. I have an ADT alarm system on my house, but no sensors in the garage currently. Wondering what the best way to set it up is?
Garage 1 - Overhead door, service door, one window that does not open (service door currently does have a wireless alarm sensor on it). Garage 2 - Overhead door, two windows that open. What's the best solution for adding alarm sensors? Most simple would be install one motion sensor in each garage. Most complicated would be sensors on the overhead doors and windows. My other question is what happens when the alarm is armed and I open the garage door(s) when returning to the house? Keypad is inside the house in the laundry/mud room. Thinking time from open to disarm on this zone may be problematic. Ideas?

Motion is likely all you need.
Most systems give you 60 seconds to disarm. That's an eternity. Check your keypad manual. You may be able to extend that maybe even by zone. |

I have sensors on my garage doors and the entry door. I have an attached garage. The biggest reason I put the sensors on the garage doors was to KNOW the doors are closed. I kept driving off wondering if I closed the for sure. Now I can see they are closed with my cell phone. You will need to add a zone to your current system.

Got tired of getting a half mile away and turning around so now I just sit and wait the 10 seconds it takes to close. It's the safety sensors, sometimes they get blocked or misaligned so the door gets almost all the way closed then opens again and you are already around the corner.

Make sure any sensor you install is rated (by temperature range) appropriate for the extreme temp fluctuations in a garage. Ask me how I know.........................

It is great to just pull over and check the status of the system an see the doors are down the system is armed and ready. No more drives back to see the door was down.

Got a smart phone? Get the app where you can turn on/off your alarm remotely. That will solve the problem of alarm going off when you open garage doors when coming home.

Man, it's great to know that I'm not the only one who has to turn around and go back home to be sure I closed the garage door!

For you guys worried about leaving your door open...
I just installed this setup on our door. Liftmaster Connected Home $100 worth of parts, cheaper if you search online. Installed on our 10yr old opener no problem. i can open, close, and check the door from my phone. Really nice when I go for a bike ride, don't have to take keys, just get back and punch it open from my phone as I'm riding down the block. |

Nice to know that's a big tent. I've had to return home more than once, much to the consternation of my friends, to check the damn door. For some reason, I've had to do it on my bike more than in my car.
If only I had a smart phone.....

ADT installed wireless sensors to doors and windows then added a zone to the main control.
Very easy and I can arm/disarm (in different kinds of alarm like away, night, etc.) together or separate.

I run an alarm company. Motion sensors and add some remotes. It will give you the flexabilty to arm and disarm various sections.

Timely topic.
We've had reports of random garage door openings / closing in our community the last week or so. Seems there is a group running around with a device capable off mimicking some remotes. Up till now it was thought to be mischievous teens. Overnight a neighbors purse was taken from inside her car which was inside her closed garage. Guess my weekend project will be tying a motion sensor into my system. I disable the remotes on my system at night before I go to bed but that does me no good when I'm not home. |
