picking up my Boxster S today
I apologize for the length of this post but I think the story is interesting how this deal came about. I had a goal to build a Porsche from scratch and always liked the 914/6 GT look. I ended up building a GT clone on a 1975 chassis. She has a 3.0 SC motor, Weber carbs full suspension setup including 911 brakes/rotors on all four corners. Loved the car in it's repainted original color of Berber Yellow. But things change in life and I decided to sell the car. Posted it on Pelican and within a week had someone flying from CA. to see the car. Met the fellow at my house, he was pleasant and knew Porsche's. The deal did not go through and I was a little bummed. For whatever reason I went onto 986forum the day after the 914 meet up. Saw an interesting post by Jake Raby that he had a 2002 Boxster S for sale that had a cracked head. I've always liked the Boxster and the wheels in my head started turning.........do I REALLY want another project ? I contacted Jake and said I was interested in the Boxster but couldn't swing a deal at the moment because I have to sell my 914/6 GT clone. He responded send me some pics ! After some pics and emails sent back and forth we met face to face at his facility. If you don't know who Jake is he is one of the most respected engine builders of the watercooled boxer engines in the U.S. and he has invented/patented many items for these engines. Included in that is the ability to repair cracked heads. So we met, he drove the 914 and while I couldn't drive the S it looked very nice and I wanted her. We made a deal, I won't say the dollar figure but Jake agreed to do xxx in engine repairs/mods to the S for a even trade for my GT. That deal was done in December 2013. Today I am picking her up. She has the LM Solution to the IMS, new water pump, AOS, cam chains and tensioners, lifters, clutch, secondary air pump, MAF plus some custom port work. Jake ran it on his chassis dyno earlier this week and she laid down 225 hp at the wheels which is a nice number. He said she's " very strong "

You will love it. The handling is amazing and it's all so very modern with great a/c etc. Good luck!

I guess in a perfect world you'd have been able to keep the 914 too. Sounds like a very cool car. Enjoy the Boxster. Have never driven one but anyone who has ends up owning one eventually!

Thanks guys. Yeah in a perfect world could have kept the 914 I poured my soul into her but only so much garage space and money available. Plus I really needed another daily driver so I didn't have to drive my diesel dually every day to work. I'm looking forward to modern features like AC, heat and a comfortable ride without sacrificing great handling. I'm 2 hours away from picking her up !!!

Congrats! I actually prefer the Boxster driving experience to the 911, but I need back seats. Reliable, nimble as hell, great ride/handling balance, great MPG, and easy to drive daily. You'll love it.

G'day!

Congrats, Rob! Very nice the way that worked out and the fact that Jake was the seller is a special bonus.
BTW - the best 914's are the ones with only 4 cylinders anyway. ![]()

First project - remove the intake silencing snorkel. Free and takes about 5 minutes. With the top down, the induction noise just over your left shoulder is intoxicating.

Won't this lower your low end torque and at the same time increase high end HP slightly?

Doubtful you would even notice the difference. It's essentially a silencing tube, though you are changing the characteristics of the airflow. I consider it like a performance intake, the only real gain is in glorious sound. The EvoMS V-Flow intake on my 996 didn't change performance in any perceptible way, but the howl under throttle is worth every penny. My biggest complaint with the 986/996 is that in stock form, they are way too quiet. A few modifications make them sound like a proper Porsche.

I also vote for pulling out the intake 'muffler' for more aural fun; the stock muffler can be changed to the sport style (vac operated?) but I never got around to it on mine
enjoy it |
