My thought is they will use it for initial training of pilots for carrier "approaches". (Their final intent may not be landing - who knows.) Perhaps they are looking at some joint activities with the Russians or Chinese (even they have standards and want pilots to have some experience...).

The article quotes US officials as nicknaming it "the target" as they surmise Iran will film themselves blowing it up as part of some propaganda scheme.

Prior stunts included a poorly constructed mock-up of stealth fighter of their own design, and filming a small radio controlled plane in flight claiming it was their new fighter.

This sort of makes sense, if they want to do a "real world" test of their missiles to insure the target recognition software works properly.

This also assumes they are very stupid, because a barge with a wooden flight deck would have a very, very different radar signature.

If they want to use it for attack aircraft training, that's just as foolish because a USN CVN is the best protected ship in the fleet, and attacking a converted barge will be nothing like fighting the carrier's CAP, as well as AA missiles from DDG's and other escorts.

Being wood, it should burn easily, so I suspect sometime soon some SEAL team is going to have a bonfire. After all, converted barges have accidents all the time, don't they?

I guess it could play a major role in a new "semi-historical" propaganda film. At least it will look like the real thing, unlike the irritating attack scenes in the movie "Pearl Harbor" (2001) in which some of the ships at anchor are obviously way too modern.

They have swarms of small attack craft which they harass our ships with.

They are working on drones of their own and have at least a dozen wing-in-ground-effect (WIG's) which are like flying boats which fly just a few feet off the water.

I suspect this "target barge" could be used to practice military maneuvers and tactics.

It will also make quite the spectacle while it burns.
