McQueen's Porsche 911 from LeMans for sale
Steve McQueen's Porsche for Sale
Published March 14, 2011 RM Auctions A Porsche once owned by the "King of Cool," Steve McQueen, is being sold at auction this summer. The1970 911 S is itself a veteran of the silver screen, having been featured in the opening sequence of McQueen’s epic tribute to his love of automobiles and motorsports, “Le Mans.” It was used as the actor’s personal car during the filming of the movie in France while he was living in a rented 30-room 15th century chateau. The car is mentioned in book, “Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon,” in a passage where the star takes a Hollywood executive visiting the set on a 100 mph ride through the French countryside. The car will cross the block at the RM Auctions Monterey event in California in August. The company says the coupe “remains in exceptionally original condition.” According to a 2008 story on InsideLine.com, McQueen brought it with him back to California after filming wrapped, but was forced to sell it just a year later when his company, Solar Productions, went bankrupt, largely due to the making of “Le Mans.” The production of the film was riddled by troubles and a relative flop at the box office. Interestingly, the Porsche is painted nearly the same shade of green as the car McQueen is better known for, the Ford Mustang that he drove through the streets of San Francisco in the 1968 smash hit “Bullitt.” RM has not offered an estimated price for the Porsche, but according to NADAGuides.com well-maintained versions of the model have a street value of $33,200, without the Hollywood pedigree, of course. In 2007, an ex-McQueen 1963 Ferrari 250 was sold for $2.3 million, nearly five times what similar cars were going for at the time. |

I just saw a photo of that 911 taken yesterday at the Amelia Island Concours. Maybe someone will post it.

I've never understood the man-lust for Steve McQueen. Or James Dean, for that matter.

Thought this bit of real Hollywood drama is worth noting.
Letter was written before the tragedy and after Manson was turned down on a script. After the massacre, supposedly McQueen always carried. ![]()

WTF does that have to do with this thread? Bit of free-association?

IF he would have gotten his gun permit he would have carried the gun in that car. Simple.

Sorry if it looked wrong but nothing of the sort was intentional. I just think its interesting facts of the era, inside Hollywood tidbit of McQueen, the Solar letterhead, LeMans movie, etc.. Godforbid we sure do have some edgy folks all up on arms. Jeez

I predict 450k for the S just for fun. I think McQueen and movie provanance will add 2.5x the cars normal value. Of course I will prob be shocked when it brings 7 figures.

Ahhh...the auction was 3 years ago and it brought 7 figures if memory serves. Look at the date of the posts.
As for being "edgy" or "hair trigger", I'm not. Something gets lost in translation when I post on the interweb. WTF does not have anger attached to it for me, just confusion and mild annoyance. The letter is part of well-known and kind of worn-out history of the Manson murders for anyone who has ever read about them. McQueen was supposed to be there on the night that Sharon Tate and the rest were killed but went out of town for the weekend instead. He packed a gun at Jay Sebring's funeral. JS drive a 911S and it was parked at the murder house, for a bit of less-known Manson trivia. Pretty sure it was black. ![]() Just thought it was random to post a Manson tidbit in an ancient thread about his movie car being sold. This '70 911S was not his personal car in the states, BTW, that was an almost identical slate grey '69 911S. I've driven that car, as well as his speedster and 930. ![]() |

As mentioned, three years ago, and yes prepared to be shocked......1.25m McQueen 911 makes Record Money That car and several of his others (the Lusso in particular) always made me think his 930 was a huge bargain at $137k. That was what, a 100% premium? Steve McQueen's '76 Porsche Turbo and 'Baja Boot' both sell at auction a little more info on the 930 as well as the Lusso; http://dedeporsche.com/2010/09/17/the-ultimate-turbo-911-ex-steve-mcqueen-1976-porsche-930-turbo/ Last edited by Nate2046; 03-24-2014 at 07:12 PM.. |
