$15K for a 99 6 speed, factory aero kit, in black. Pretty, but high miles at 143K.

Hydrocket 03-25-2014 09:34 PM

Yea, I spoke to this guy already. Has several small issues (tear in seat bolster, driver's power seat doesn't work etc...the type of items that a car lover would fix IMO)...plus the clutch will need to be done at some point soon. I believe he claimed it's the original clutch.

But thanks for the link, Lee!

Thanks anyways...

Sorry, I was trying to be funny. The car is located in New Zealand, expensive shipping, expensive car, steering wheel on the wrong side...

What do you guys think of these engines with 150,000 miles?

This is not an engine you will rebuild, it's disposable. Is 250,000 miles a reasonable expectation? (presuming it was well looked after).

onewhippedpuppy 03-26-2014 05:06 AM

That's actually not true, there are shops that rebuild them. There are multiple cars on Rennlist with over 150k and a couple with over 200k on the original motor. It's really like any other high mileage car, do your due diligence on maintenance and inspection (leakdown test) and you'll be fine.

1990C4S 03-26-2014 05:19 AM

Yes, they can be rebuilt, I just don't think it's logical to spend that much on a $15,000 car. A V8 or a used engine would be cheaper.

Lone Star RPM in Austin has a good reputation and is in the $8k ballpark for a rebuilt M96. Used engines from reputable sellers are in the $4-6k ballpark. An LS3 swap with a crate motor and Renegade Hybrid kit is in the $15-20k ballpark. Flat Six Innovations doesn't publish pricing, but I believe they are also in the $15-20k ballpark. Lots of options with a wide variety of pricing, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune.

Here is a really nice looking 996 in British Columbia. I don't think it is very difficult to import.

Nice find, Scott.

Sorry The one in Kansas City sold in about an hour

speeder 03-26-2014 09:04 AM

All 996s are affordable and they sold about a zillion of them. It's like looking for a good Honda Accord, relative to other Porsche models.

I'd just hunt them on CL in your town.

As I said...ultimately I think it's more about maintenance, upkeep and condition than outright miles.

If there's a car with high mileage that's impeccable there's no reason it shouldn't be considered.

There's a millenium edition C4 posted for sale at PCA website with 286,000 miles on it.

There was a time not long ago when a 911SC cost $12,000 and a complete 3.0 rebuild cost $12,000 (or there-a-bouts).
