Perhaps a solid low mile car is worth a few thousand dollars more...

A salvage title will hurt the value in a big way regardless of the reason.

Seems like the discount for taking high miles isn't worth it, either.

That car looks filthy anyway, and it sounds like they just swapped in a used engine. Way too many variables for a car that's not even cheap.

A little on the high side, but all of the maintenance has been done and it has lots of goodies: 1999 Porsche 911 996 Carrera 2 ($50k+ in upgrades in past 3 yrs

Especially if those modifications were to your taste. Personally I would probably consider it for a driver, it has all the right work done.

Kinda wondering why he didn't take it to RUF Auto since they worked on it, dunno

I agree, it's a lovely car and has the right mods. But since I'm located in Canada, I have a few more issues to consider:

12% right off the top for exchange. (The car is now $25,760)
Import Duty of 6% + $100 A/C tax + $195 RIV fee (The car is now $27,600)
Plus HST of 13%

Final tally: ~$31,000 on road, taxes in.

So with all the duties, exchange rate and whatnot, the cost can run up in a hurry.

You have to weigh the benefit of a southern car versus the importation fees.

You probably don't want an Ontario car of that vintage, maybe BC?

OUCH! That hurts the pocketbook. So why even shop in the USA? Are the cars cheaper here?

Good point. I've purchased a lot of cars from OK and TX, including my current 996. It is wonderful to work on, no rusted bolts. I made the mistake of buying my now gone RX8 in NE, every project involved replacing rusted fasteners that broke or had to be cut off.

speeder 03-28-2014 07:58 AM

Are these cars not common in Canada?

Aragorn 03-28-2014 08:06 AM

Nowhere near as many sold here.

1999 Porsche 911 Carrera**6 SPEED**NAVI** for $23,000 in Toronto | autoTRADER.ca

Toronto and Vancouver would be the two most likely spots to find one.

It's a sheer numbers game. For example, California alone sells more cars per year than all of Canada.

So my selection will be much greater looking in the US for one of those truly affordable 911. On all of Auto Trader in Canada, there are only 29 996s nationally being sold for $30k or less. Not much selection as you can see.

What's the deal with the 2 tone seats in the front?

Not factory, that's for sure. They obviously recovered the seats and added the colored interior bits. Interesting exterior too, I'm not sure what color that is.

maxnine11 03-29-2014 04:58 AM

The white balance is off on several of the photos, but I think the exterior colour is Vesuvius Grey. It has a definite purple hue. Which would explain why someone chose to add the purplish upholstery to the seat centre sections.

Edit - running his phone number, it appears that he's a dealer of some sort. Not that being a dealer is a problem, but he's selling "by owner" so it would be interesting to know how much he discloses.
