When do you stop to get gas?

When the gauge is at 1/2 tank.
When the gauge is at 1/4 tank.
When the gauge is at 1/8 tank.
When I am on fumes and the get gas now light is on.
When I am stuck on the side of the road out of gas again!

CHICKS 04-14-2014 10:52 AM

1/2 tank.

GH85Carrera 04-14-2014 10:54 AM

I will vote in this as well.

I prefer to stop when I am down to 1/4 tank. I have never in my life run totally out of gas.

My brother will drive until there are only fumes.

My grandmother would start to panic if the needle was below 1/2 tank.

gacook 04-14-2014 11:00 AM

Typically, 1/4. Occasionally, down to fumes to see how accurate the "You have X miles left till empty" readout is. Never had the balls to let it go under 2 miles left till empty...lol.

syncroid 04-14-2014 11:20 AM

I wait for the low fuel light to come on unless I am on a trip.

Tervuren 04-14-2014 11:29 AM

I know even with the fuel light on - conservative driving will get me where I'm going and back. Next convenient time after fuel light kicks on.

I'll also fill up at times I'm not as busy so I don't have to worry about it later.

imcarthur 04-14-2014 12:02 PM

In my own cars - when the light is on (to the annoyance of my spouse who gets crazed about running out). In rentals cars - 1/8 tank or as soon as the light comes on - since I don't know what the limit is.

I fill up anywhere from ½-¼ tank. I've been driving since '71 and have never run out of gas, neither
with my personal cars or driving company trucks.

I have a fellow that works for my company that has run out 4 times in the last year alone. I can't figure him out. He says he's too occupied to remember. I say he's negligent.

Arizona_928 04-14-2014 12:21 PM

1/8, but I use some of that while searching for diesel.

rfloz 04-14-2014 12:35 PM

When the gauge is at 1/8 tank.

But then, my gauge is always at 1/8 tank. Gotta fix that one day.

legion 04-14-2014 12:38 PM

Am I the only one that does it at 3/4!?

Bill Douglas 04-14-2014 12:47 PM

When the light has been on for a day or two. I don't know why I do this. I've only got it wrong once and the car stopped on the side of the road.

911SauCy 04-14-2014 12:48 PM

Don't let the 911 get below 1/4...

'06 Altima is breathing fumes before she get's fed

Lusso1 04-14-2014 12:51 PM

When the light goes on, BUT all my cars are equipped with an audible gas monitoring and warning device.

When the device begins to continually "buzz" me about the gas being low, or possibly being low, I look for a gas station and attempt to silence the warning device by stroking her knee and telling her I will take car of things.

stomachmonkey 04-14-2014 01:01 PM

I voted 1/2 because that's when I start thinking about it.

Seems the 2nd half goes quicker than the 1st.

Typically I fill up with 1/3rd left.

Almost never below 1/4.

My wife goes by the trip meter, right around 150 miles, she does not trust gauges.

flipper35 04-14-2014 01:01 PM

I wait until it is low. Better city mileage that way with less weight to haul around. I can get to work and back when the light comes on and go near several gas stations so no big deal. In the winter I don't let it get that low if the weather is bad.

masraum 04-14-2014 01:13 PM

I'm usually in the 1/8 - 1/4 range, but I have been down to about 10-20 miles left before empty.

sailchef 04-14-2014 01:27 PM

Before I run out.

look 171 04-14-2014 01:36 PM

1/4 to 1/8 tank. More like 1/8 for the most part. I sometimes run it almost dry below the empty nark with the light on just to make sure I know how much further I can actually go to get to know my cars better. Just so I know what to do in that situation.

widgeon13 04-14-2014 01:39 PM

When I see a low price.

on2wheels52 04-14-2014 02:25 PM

No gauge on the bikes, I wait until they go on reserve. I've run them all dry to see how far they will go (while carrying a gas can).
Jim

Joe Bob 04-14-2014 02:55 PM

At 300 miles on the odo, I ignore the gauge.

porsche4life 04-14-2014 03:03 PM

Depends on where I'm at, and if I have a trailer... If I'm in remote New Mexico or AZ pulling a trailer getting 10mpg and I see a good place to stop and I'm below 1/2 I fill that sucker up!

rwest 04-14-2014 03:04 PM

Quarter around town, half when on a long road trip and half when the temps are going to be below zero.

Aurel 04-14-2014 03:10 PM

When the light is on around town. When I get below 1/4 on long trips.
I can also use gps to know where to get gas, and act based on that info.

911boost 04-14-2014 03:47 PM

The miles till zero on my truck is waaay conservative, but I don't want to run it out of diesel so I usually fill up right when the light comes on, or if I have spare time and see a good price I fill up then if its below 1/2 tank.

On my dd, usually when the needle is in the red as I know how far I can go below it until I am in trouble.

Bill

90% of my driving is within 5 miles of home. There are at least a dozen gas stations within that range. If I'm going to be driving a greater distance, I'll check the gauge before heading out and fill up accordingly. Otherwise, I wait for the light, which by the way, lets me know I only have 50-70 miles to travel before the engine will die on me.

Yes, you need this option too.
Gas is once again hitting $4/gal here in Seattle.

sand_man 04-14-2014 07:21 PM

In my 993, when the low fuel light comes on. I start looking for a gas station within the next 20 miles.

onewhippedpuppy 04-14-2014 07:46 PM

1/4 around town. On a road trip I start looking for a good stopping place when I go under 1/2. In the country it's sometimes 50+ miles to the next station, not the time to test your trip computer accuracy.

This, especially in the summer, I will get gas early in the AM. On a road trip, I will plan out pretty far ahead.

A930Rocket 04-14-2014 08:56 PM

When the light comes on.

Heel n Toe 04-14-2014 09:17 PM

1/4 tank... in town (and on the open road if I know I'm not going to run too low before the next chance to get more), because it can supposedly get expensive if you run dry and burn up the electronic fuel pump.

sammyg2 04-14-2014 09:23 PM

Earthquake country. I rarely go below 1/4 tank. Just in case .............................

wdfifteen 04-14-2014 09:42 PM

I keep it full in the winter. I'll top it off from 1/4 tank if a storm is coming.
Summer I wait till the light comes on.

slodave 04-14-2014 09:46 PM

I usually don't have to stop to get gas. It shows up on its own, random schedule.

livi 04-15-2014 03:14 AM

Once every other week.

petrolhead611 04-15-2014 03:30 AM

In my DD, I drive 1000 miles in a bad week, 600 miles in a good week, so I keep an eye out for cheap diesel once my gauge shows 1/2 empty. I fill up once I am reasonably sure that I won't beat that price.(in UK diesel can vary by at least 30-50 cents per gallon from station to station, and as I only get 48mpg that can represent the price of a cheap meal per week in savings).
My competition cars, I keep the gas tanks only full enough to get to and from the event plus what I will use there.

ledhedsymbols 04-15-2014 03:46 AM

I refill about 1/4 most of the time. It also varies according to plan. I make sure to fuel up at my couple of preferred stations before I leave town if I know I am going to be traveling any kind of distance. I hate trying to find a suitable station on the fly. I prefer non-ethanol fuel.

71scgc 04-15-2014 04:01 AM

When the low fuel bell rings in my truck. This happens at 23 gal. on a 26 gal. tank.
I monitor consumption with my trip meter. I usually get 16-17 mpg in mixed driving.
When I'm on the interstate, I stop when I have to pee. Empty one tank, fill the other....
