When do you stop to get gas?
When the gauge is at 1/2 tank.
When the gauge is at 1/4 tank. When the gauge is at 1/8 tank. When I am on fumes and the get gas now light is on. When I am stuck on the side of the road out of gas again! |
1/2 tank.
|
I will vote in this as well.
I prefer to stop when I am down to 1/4 tank. I have never in my life run totally out of gas. My brother will drive until there are only fumes. My grandmother would start to panic if the needle was below 1/2 tank. |
Typically, 1/4. Occasionally, down to fumes to see how accurate the "You have X miles left till empty" readout is. Never had the balls to let it go under 2 miles left till empty...lol.
|
I wait for the low fuel light to come on unless I am on a trip.
|
I know even with the fuel light on - conservative driving will get me where I'm going and back. Next convenient time after fuel light kicks on.
I'll also fill up at times I'm not as busy so I don't have to worry about it later. |
In my own cars - when the light is on (to the annoyance of my spouse who gets crazed about running out). In rentals cars - 1/8 tank or as soon as the light comes on - since I don't know what the limit is.

I fill up anywhere from ½-¼ tank. I've been driving since '71 and have never run out of gas, neither
with my personal cars or driving company trucks. I have a fellow that works for my company that has run out 4 times in the last year alone. I can't figure him out. He says he's too occupied to remember. I say he's negligent. |
1/8, but I use some of that while searching for diesel.
|
When the gauge is at 1/8 tank.
But then, my gauge is always at 1/8 tank. Gotta fix that one day. |
Am I the only one that does it at 3/4!?
|
When the light has been on for a day or two. I don't know why I do this. I've only got it wrong once and the car stopped on the side of the road.
|
Don't let the 911 get below 1/4...
'06 Altima is breathing fumes before she get's fed |
When the light goes on, BUT all my cars are equipped with an audible gas monitoring and warning device.
When the device begins to continually "buzz" me about the gas being low, or possibly being low, I look for a gas station and attempt to silence the warning device by stroking her knee and telling her I will take car of things. |
I voted 1/2 because that's when I start thinking about it.
Seems the 2nd half goes quicker than the 1st. Typically I fill up with 1/3rd left. Almost never below 1/4. My wife goes by the trip meter, right around 150 miles, she does not trust gauges. |
I wait until it is low. Better city mileage that way with less weight to haul around. I can get to work and back when the light comes on and go near several gas stations so no big deal. In the winter I don't let it get that low if the weather is bad.
|
I'm usually in the 1/8 - 1/4 range, but I have been down to about 10-20 miles left before empty.
|
Before I run out.
|
1/4 to 1/8 tank. More like 1/8 for the most part. I sometimes run it almost dry below the empty nark with the light on just to make sure I know how much further I can actually go to get to know my cars better. Just so I know what to do in that situation.
|
When I see a low price.
|
No gauge on the bikes, I wait until they go on reserve. I've run them all dry to see how far they will go (while carrying a gas can).

At 300 miles on the odo, I ignore the gauge.
|
Depends on where I'm at, and if I have a trailer... If I'm in remote New Mexico or AZ pulling a trailer getting 10mpg and I see a good place to stop and I'm below 1/2 I fill that sucker up!
|
Quarter around town, half when on a long road trip and half when the temps are going to be below zero.
|
When the light is on around town. When I get below 1/4 on long trips.
I can also use gps to know where to get gas, and act based on that info. |
The miles till zero on my truck is waaay conservative, but I don't want to run it out of diesel so I usually fill up right when the light comes on, or if I have spare time and see a good price I fill up then if its below 1/2 tank.
On my dd, usually when the needle is in the red as I know how far I can go below it until I am in trouble. Bill |
90% of my driving is within 5 miles of home. There are at least a dozen gas stations within that range. If I'm going to be driving a greater distance, I'll check the gauge before heading out and fill up accordingly. Otherwise, I wait for the light, which by the way, lets me know I only have 50-70 miles to travel before the engine will die on me.

Gas is once again hitting $4/gal here in Seattle. |
In my 993, when the low fuel light comes on. I start looking for a gas station within the next 20 miles.
|
1/4 around town. On a road trip I start looking for a good stopping place when I go under 1/2. In the country it's sometimes 50+ miles to the next station, not the time to test your trip computer accuracy.

When the light comes on.

1/4 tank... in town (and on the open road if I know I'm not going to run too low before the next chance to get more), because it can supposedly get expensive if you run dry and burn up the electronic fuel pump.
|
Earthquake country. I rarely go below 1/4 tank. Just in case .............................
|
I keep it full in the winter. I'll top it off from 1/4 tank if a storm is coming.
Summer I wait till the light comes on. |
I usually don't have to stop to get gas. It shows up on its own, random schedule.
|
Once every other week.
|
In my DD, I drive 1000 miles in a bad week, 600 miles in a good week, so I keep an eye out for cheap diesel once my gauge shows 1/2 empty. I fill up once I am reasonably sure that I won't beat that price.(in UK diesel can vary by at least 30-50 cents per gallon from station to station, and as I only get 48mpg that can represent the price of a cheap meal per week in savings).
My competition cars, I keep the gas tanks only full enough to get to and from the event plus what I will use there. |
I refill about 1/4 most of the time. It also varies according to plan. I make sure to fuel up at my couple of preferred stations before I leave town if I know I am going to be traveling any kind of distance. I hate trying to find a suitable station on the fly. I prefer non-ethanol fuel.
|
When the low fuel bell rings in my truck. This happens at 23 gal. on a 26 gal. tank.
I monitor consumption with my trip meter. I usually get 16-17 mpg in mixed driving. When I'm on the interstate, I stop when I have to pee. Empty one tank, fill the other.... Carter |
